I came hard, heat flooding the space between us, and a moment later, he joined me, his hips jerking against mine, then stalling before grinding there as he found release.
No pulling out this time. I was a vampire now. The risk of us creating a child was slim to none. We could have this.
Each other.
And that was all that mattered.
I sagged, falling onto his chest, and he wrapped his arms around me, fingers sinking into my hair to massage my scalp.
We lay in silence, reveling in the afterglow for long minutes before he sighed and kissed the top of my head. “We can’t let you go so long between feeds again.”
There was no admonishment in his tone, even though he had every right to tell me off.
“You’re not upset with me?”
He gently tugged my hair, pulling my head back so he could look at my face. “Why would I be upset with you? You’re a newly turned vampire without her sire to guide her. I’m pissed at myself for not keeping tabs on your feeding in Ezekiel’s absence.”
“There’s been a lot going on.”
“Yeah, I suppose there has.”
I stifled a yawn. “I’ll be more careful.”
He kissed my forehead. “Get some sleep. I need to do a perimeter check with Godor.”
My eyelids were already heavy. “Sleep? Here? In your bed?”
“I want your scent all over my sheets.” He kissed my neck, my jaw, then my mouth. “I’ll be back to hold you soon.”
I let him tuck me in, barely registering his featherlight kiss to my cheek before darkness dragged me into the land of dreams.
Chapter 40
HEMLOCK
Another meal arrives before the echo returns. My pulse quickens at the sight of her, confirmation that I’m not insane, or is it? What if I’m imagining her right now? What if this whole place is a dream?
She flits closer, so close that her eyes fill my vision. “I took a trip,” she says. “It’s time. Are you ready?”
I nod mutely. Best to go along with…whatever this is.
Spots of ice bloom at my temple, and it takes a moment to realize that she’s touching me. “Close your eyes and drift with me.”
“I…I don’t know what you mean.”
Cool air kisses my forehead. “Dream, child.”
I fall into darkness, stomach dropping, heart pounding as I spiral into nothingness until ice grips my wrist, and suddenly I’m no longer falling. I’m no longer alone.
“This way,” the echo says. The darkness erupts with colors that rush by, melting together until they turn white, until there is nothing but light, and once again, I’m falling, but this time, the echo is with me, her icy embrace wrapped around me. “It’sall right. We’re almost there. She can’t find us here.” I blink, and her eyes take up my vision. I see my face reflected in them for a moment, but it shifts and morphs into another face.
Ezekiel?
I blink and stare at the cozy sitting room around me, body tingling as if there are bees beneath my skin.
“Hemlock?” Ezekiel sounds as stunned as I feel.
I turn to find Ezekiel striding toward me, and in the next moment, I’m pulled into a hug, and damn does it feel good to feel something.
