There’s a long pause before Tyler speaks. “You’re right.” His voice is softer now, remorseful. “What I said wasn’t cool. I should apologize to them again.”
Another long pause.
“Thanks for helping me see what an asshole move that was,” Tyler says. “Never thought you, Ms. I’m Never Getting Married, would be the one going on about how great marriage is.”
Maya starts to speak, but her brother stops her.
“I’m kidding, Maya. I swear, I’m not that dense. I know what you mean. It’s not about how great marriage is. It’s about the fact that everyone has the right to get married if they want.”
“Look at you learning lessons, big brother.”
“Told you I’m more than just ridiculously good-looking.”
Maya makes a scoff-laughing noise, and I hear them walk off.
For the rest of the night, all I can think about is what Tyler said about Maya.
Ms. I’m Never Getting Married.
I know I’ve got zero right to wonder about this. I’ve never really thought about getting married honestly. It’s not because I’m anti-marriage. I think I’d like to get married someday. It’s more like I just never thought about it.
But now I am.
A weird unsettled feeling hits me. I think about Maya and acknowledge the fact that it’s bothering me not knowing why she’s written off marriage completely.
Even though she and I are hooking up, I know we’re not serious. We aren’t even technically a couple. Whatever her stance is on marriage, it’s none of my business.
But that doesn’t halt my curiosity. I wanna know why she never wants to get married.
Chapter26
Maya
“Iwish you would have told me it’s black tie,” Theo hollers from the master bedroom.
“I did tell you. Twice,” I holler back from the hallway bathroom while applying my lipstick.
“Really?” His chuckle echoes down the hall before he mutters a curse.
“Everything okay?” I ask.
“These shoes are uncomfortable as fuck. And Christ, this tie. Every time I try to tie it, I almost choke myself.”
His chuckle echoes down the hall. I observe my reflection in the mirror, how I’m struggling to hold back a smile so I don’t smear the deep red stain on my lips.
I set my lipstick on the counter, then walk to his bedroom. “Let me help—whoa…”
I lose my breath the moment I get a look at Theo. I take in the impeccable tailoring of his black suit, how it looks like it was fitted to his body. Even with his black tie hanging loose around his neck, he looks incredible. Like a male model getting ready to strut down the runway. When I make it to his face, I nearly choke. He’s smoothed back his sandy blond waves and did a clean shave of his face. He is mind-achingly handsome.
He flashes a dazzling grin and holds his hands up at his side. “I clean up pretty good, huh?”
“Good? Try incredible. You look like James Bond.”
“You say that like you’re pissed.” He chuckles.
“No, it’s just…” I walk up to him and rest my palms on his chest. I tilt my head up and peck my lips on his. I’m aching to lay a proper kiss on him, but I can’t risk messing up my makeup and making us late for Declan and Austin’s party.
“No human being has any right to look that hot in a suit,” I growl softly.
