I nod, trying my hardest not to act like a lovestruck weirdo. I need to tell him how I feel…so I can see if he feels the same way.

He swipes the silverware from the tray and cuts up a waffle. He hands the fork to me, I spear a waffle chunk, and offer it to him.

He shakes his head before stealing another couple of berries. “No way. First, bite goes to you.” He presses a kiss to my forehead.

For a second, I just look at him as he pops raspberries in his mouth and winks at me. Just when I thought my heart couldn’t flutter any harder. I shove the waffle into my mouth, savoring the sweet goodness.

I can’t just sit here while these feelings explode inside of me. I need to tell him how I feel about him.

I set down my fork and take a breath. “Theo, I lo—”

His phone blares from the nightstand, interrupting me. He frowns at it.

“Hang on, let me silence that.” He reaches for his phone and swipes it up. But instead of silencing it, he stares intently at the screen.

“It’s my agent.” He looks at me.

“Oh…” Theo hasn’t heard from his agent once in the two months that he’s been staying at the cabin with me.

“I should probably answer it,” he says while studying his phone.

“Um, yeah. Probably.” I shove another hunk of waffle in my mouth.

He drags his index finger across his phone screen. “Hey, Javier. What’s up?”

I try my hardest to focus on my plate of half-eaten waffles and not eavesdrop on Theo’s phone conversation, but I fail miserably.

“Are you serious?” Theo says.

I turn slightly and see a bewildered smile on his face. Like he’s getting some great news that he can’t believe.

“You’re serious, Javier? You’re not fucking with me?”

A second later Theo jumps out of bed and fist-pumps the air.

“Holy shit…I can’t believe it.”

Theo stares ahead, grinning.

“I’m there. I’ll be the first one to show up, I swear,” he says after he’s been quiet for a while. He rests his free hand on his hip and dips his head, eyes closed, but still smiling. Like he’s soaking in whatever good news he’s getting.

“Thank you, Javier. Seriously, thank you.”

He hangs up and spins around to me. “That was my agent. I’m back on the team.”

“What?” I move the tray aside and run over to him. “That’s amazing, Theo!”

I jump up to hug him and he scoops me up. I wrap my legs around his waist and kiss him.

“Congra…tu…lations,” I say between kisses.

He murmurs against my lips. For a minute we stay that way, kissing and giggling and grabbing each other. When he sets me down, he takes a breath, like he still can’t quite believe what’s happened.

He rests his hands on top of his head. “I guess laying low for a couple of months paid off.”

He tells me that his contract with the Bashers has been reinstated. He’ll be able to play for them for the rest of the season.

“They’ve been keeping tabs on my rehab with my PT and I guess they’re happy with my recovery. And the fact that I’ve stayed out of trouble. I can play again.”
