“You’re thinking of what?” he whispers, eyes bulging. “That’s a nice neighborhood, Emma, and tell me: who’s going to pay for that? Who’s going to put down a deposit for your lease? Who’s going to pay the water and electric, not to mention your permits and business licenses? What the fuck, Emma? I’ve forked over hundreds of thousands for your education already, and this is how you repay me?”
I’m blinking back tears at this point, my insides quivering with shame because Rick has a point. I feel small, ungrateful, and very lost hearing his words. My mind begins to whir, and I speak in a trembling voice.
“Well, maybe I could reconsider?—”
But then, a masculine presence fills the air, and immediately, a sense of calm fills my being. It’s like a soothing warmth pouring over my soul, and sure enough, I feel Logan’s big hand on my shoulder.
“Actually, buddy, I’ll be funding your daughter’s foray into brick and mortar,” my boyfriend growls. “Emma won’t need a cent from you.”
My dad’s face goes white with shock, then red and mottled as he takes in Logan’s large hand on my frame. If anything, I’ve moved even closer to the large alpha male so that I’m basically pressed into Logan’s side.
“What the fuck are you doing here, Blackshaw?” Rick spits. “And why the fuck are you touching my daughter?”
Logan and I exchange a look, and this time, the alpha male slings an arm about my narrow shoulders, pulling me close against his large frame.
“I’m touching Emma because actually, we’re dating. I’m in love with your daughter, my friend, and I want what’s best for her. Emma decided that pre-med isn’t what she wants, at least not at this point in her life, and I agreed. I didn’t like seeing her stressed and tired all the time, not to mention on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Emma’s well-being is of paramount importance to me, and as a result, I’ve decided to support her by financing the first location of Redline and Roses.”
Logan’s words are so thoughtful, confident, and sure, that tears prickle at my eyes again, but for a different reason. This is a man who believes in me, and who has my back in every which way. He’s even willing to sacrifice his friendship with my father, if it comes to that.
But Rick’s still shocked, his eyes bulging from their sockets.
“You’ve gotten her pregnant,” he rasps. “You got my little girl pregnant and this is why she’s dropping out of school!”
Logan looks startled for a moment, but then he shakes his dark head.
“No, there’s no pregnancy involved, although I’d love for Emma to grow round with my baby in her belly. She’s old enough, and I can’t think of a better woman to be a mother to my children. But no, your daughter’s not pregnant, so it’s not some kind of emergency situation where I’m stepping in because of an unexpected baby.”
My jaw drops because Logan and I have never talked about starting a family together! Yes, our conversations have ranged far and wide, but if anything, we were both committed to family planning, and the use of contraception. So where is this coming from?
Yet the alpha male turns towards me, his blue eyes fierce and possessive as he takes in my curvy form.
“I haven’t brought it up with you, Emma, because there’s so much going in our lives right now. You’ve had to make a lot of big decisions over the past couple months, and I didn’t want to throw more into the mix. But yes, baby girl, I’d love for you to have my babies. I’d love to watch you grow round and heavy with my children in your belly, and I’d love to start a family with you. All when you’re ready of course,” he adds, blue eyes flashing. “There’s no rush because we’re just at the beginning of our journey together, and you’re young. But I want you to know that I’m behind you every step of the way.”
My eyes widen as I stare at the handsome man. Is Logan serious? Yes, we’ve talked about our relationship, and what we want for and from each other. But our conversations were focused on the near term, with me taking a leave from school, the opening of Redline and Roses, as well as potentially moving in together in his penthouse. There was no talk of anything more than the next year or so because it just didn’t come up. But Logan reads my mind and gazes deep into my wide eyes.
“I love you, Emma Kincaid,” he rasps quietly, uncaring that we’re at a restaurant with my dad within earshot. “You mean the world to me and I want you to know that I’m with you, through thick and thin. Whatever you want to do, we’ll find a way to make it happen. I’m committed to you, sweetheart, and with your joy and energy, and my resources, the world is your oyster. All I ask is for a chance to enjoy it at your side.”
Then, Logan presses his lips to mine, his tongue gently questing against the seam of my lips. I part my plush pout, welcoming him because this is how it was meant to be. I adore this man as much as he adores me, and I don’t care that we’re in a restaurant either, with my dad listening in. Instead, all that matters is the peace and happiness that I feel in Logan Blackshaw’s arms, and my hands creep around his neck as he pulls me close.
We kiss passionately, the crowd blocked out by the sensuousness of Logan’s touch on my body. But then, a clap brings us back to reality, and after a few more claps, Logan and I pull apart to see what’s going on.
To our surprise, the entire restaurant is clapping and it seems my dad’s leading the applause.
“Dad, why are you clapping?” I ask in a low voice that only me, Logan and he can hear. “I know this is a shock to you, but I promise, this is what I want. A life with Logan.”
My father merely shakes his head, his blue eyes still startled but also approving. He doesn’t answer my question, but instead, turns to his friend.
“Buddy, I don’t know if I should slug you or shake your hand, but those were pretty, pretty words, and if you fuck up, I’m coming after you with a shotgun.”
Logan grins, flashing brilliant white teeth in his bronzed face.
“I wouldn’t expect less,” he growls, pulling me close once more. “But yes, I’m in love with your daughter, and Emma’s moving in with me. We’re going to get her pregnant as soon as possible.”
“Wait, what?” I gasp, eyes wide, staring up at the alpha male. “We haven’t talked about that yet!”
Logan presses a tender kiss to my forehead.
“I know, I’m just projecting,” he growls while staring into my eyes with adoration. “Again, I can’t wait to be a dad, and you’d be a wonderful mommy, sweetheart. I can’t wait to have a daughter who looks just like you, with the same big blue eyes and long golden hair.”
