“Ms. Davis, can you tell me the extent of your relationship with Derek?”
Asha sat forward, clearing her throat. “We were together for four years.”
“Together? Don’t you think that’s a stretch? I mean, he was married.”
Asha shifted uncomfortably in her seat, staring daggers at Cara. “He was only married out of obligation. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant, Derek would have never married her. It wasmehe loved.”
I gritted my teeth as I thought back to when I had read a similar message in Derek’s phone minus the part about him loving her. He definitely told Danny that he felt he had to do the right thing when I had gotten pregnant. Derek claimed he loved me. He just wasn’t in love with me. He thought he could eventually get there but with time, we kind of drifted apart instead.
Cara pulled a sheet of paper from her file and scanned it with a raised brow. “But didn’t he leave you after you lost your baby?”
“Are you going to ask my client a question about the actual reason we’re here, Detective, or just continue to rehash her past relationships?” Asha’s lawyer intervened.
“Relationships? I’ve only asked about one. Were there more married men?” Cara held a tiny smirk as Asha balled her fist up.
“I am not a home-wrecker. We were in love!”
“Were you?” Cara asked in a disbelieving tone.
“Cara, stop. It’s not her fault Derek led her on,” Sara interjected.
It seemed Sara’s comment pissed Asha off more than the things Cara was saying. I guess she didn’t take too well to being pitied.
“Led me on? You have no clue what the hell you’re talking about. He got me pregnant on purpose. He wanted a family with me! Had I not miscarried, he would still be here. We would have been a family. Me, him, Gabi, and our baby.”
“What do you mean had you not miscarried he would still be here?” Cara stared at her intently, causing Asha eyes to buck at the slip.
She didn’t even realize she had just told on herself. It wasn’t solid enough to prove her guilt, but I was now certain Cara and Sara would get that confession. Asha was already cracking under pressure. Her miscarriage was ultimately the demise of her and Derek’s relationship. He left her and she killed him for it. Now we just needed her to admit it.
“I think what my client means—” Asha lawyer tried to speak up, but Cara cut him off.
“I don’t need you to think for your client, Counselor. I need her to answer my question.”
“I j-just mean he would have never left me,” Asha said nervously. She began to fidget with her fingers, looking from her lawyer to Cara.
“Okay. How about you tell us where you were the night Derek was murdered?” Sara questioned.
“I was with a good friend of mine. He was recently killed during a home invasion.”
“How convenient.” Cara took a sip of her water, ignoring the venomous stare from Asha. “Tell me something, Ms. Davis. You say you and Derek were in love, correct?”
“Yes,” Asha stated matter-of-factly.
“Then how come you didn’t attend his funeral?”
“His family wouldn’t allow it. They wanted to respect his wishes and keep our relationship away fromher.”
“You mean his wife?” Sara asked innocently.
I snickered because I knew she was taking a small jab at Asha. She was supposed to be the comforting one, but with a question like that, it would do more harm than good.
Asha stared at Sara like she wanted to pounce. “Yes,” she gritted through clenched teeth.
“I know that had to sting. Even in death, you still came second to his wife.” Cara held eye contact with Asha while sipping her water. She was cool as a cucumber. Meanwhile, Asha looked ready to burst at the seams.
“Second?!” she snarled.
Her lawyer tried whispering in her ear, but she moved away. I could tell he was getting frustrated because he knew Cara had struck a nerve. At any given moment, Asha could snap and say something that would seal her fate.
