She shook her head in disbelief. “N-no that’s not t-t-true.”

“It is. Jamie, we’ve known each other for years. I never made you my woman because I didn’t want that with you.”

“Don’t say that!”

“It’s true. You’re blaming Giovanna because it’s easier to do that than face the truth.”

“Stop it!” she screamed as she dropped her hand that held the gun.

“I can't stop until you understand that I don’t want to be with you.”

“YOU’RE LYING!”

Jamie was becoming unhinged by the second. “No. I’m not. I need you to understand that even if it wasn’t Giovanna, it will never be you.”

“I SAID STOP IT!” she snapped and raised the gun, letting off two shots.

Everything was a blur of motion. One moment, I was on my feet, and the next, I was on the ground. My shoulder felt like it was on fire. I heard a few more shots followed by Giovanna’s screams.

“Hold on, Capone. We got you,” Doc said as he checked out my shoulder.

“Giovanna?” I rasped with a clenched jaw.

“I’m here, honey.” Giovanna kneeled on the other side of me. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing she was unharmed.

“Looks like one of the bullets went through and through, but one is stuck in there,” Doc said.

“Take it out,” I told him. This shit hurt like hell. I could very well ride back to the clubhouse and wait until Doc gave me some medicine to remove the bullet, but I also knew the longer it stayed, the more heightened the long-lasting effects.

“You sure?”

I nodded, and Doc grabbed his medical bag. I turned away, not wanting to watch him dig into my shoulder.

Giovanna palmed my cheeks, bringing her forehead to mine. “Focus on me, okay?” she whispered, tears pouring from her eyes.

I tried my best not to react, but when I felt Doc dig into my flesh, I groaned like a wounded animal. I felt hands come down on my arm, holding me still as I tried fighting against the pain. It felt like Doc was digging around for minutes before I felt the relief of the bullet being removed.

“There we go. Let’s get you out of here so I can patch you up,” Doc said.

Doc and Giovanna helped me up from the ground. It was then that I was finally able to see Jamie sprawled out on the ground. Her eyes were wide open, but they had no life in them. I shook my head, hating that it had to come to this.

“You okay?” I asked Giovanna.

She scoffed and choked out a giggle. “You’re standing here with two bullet wounds and you’re asking me ifI’mokay?”

I shrugged my good shoulder. “Yeah.”

Rising on her toes, she pecked my lips. “Yes, you crazy man. I’m just fine as long as I have you by my side.”

I gave her a few kisses of my own. “Well, it’s a good thing I don’t plan on going anywhere.”

Giovanna smiled as we made our way out of the barn. I had my woman, and that was all that mattered. Everything was going to be just fine from here on out.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

GIOVANNA

“Are you nervous?” I asked Luca as we pulled up to the clubhouse.
