Meanwhile, Mason led me back toward the house.
“You’re awesome when you’re all caveman-proprietary,” I whispered.
“What? Who? Me? No.”
I tugged on his hand and he glanced at me over his shoulder, then stopped. He sighed. “Okay, maybeslightly. Only ’cause the dude knows cars. And only ’cause you like it when I’m proprietary.”
My lips twitched. The man understood me, no doubt about it. “I really do. And I feel that way about you sometimes, too, you know? When I think of you and Victoria.”
“That’s not… It wasn’t in the same realm as me and you, Fenn.”
“I know. Just like deep down, you know that you are every single thing I’ve ever wanted.”
“Yeah,” he agreed softly. “I do.”
“And you make me happier than I ever thought I had a right to be.”
“Same,” Mason said. His arms went around my waist, pulling me against him right there in the backyard.
“And when we get home, our house renovations will be done—”
“For now.”
“For now,” I agreed. I pressed a kiss to his forehead. “And we can justbe.” It sounded pretty freakin’ perfect.
“Do you ever worry that you’ll get bored ‘justbeing’with me?” Mason said in a soft voice. “Now that the island is coming back to life, and we have money, and a house…will that be enough excitement for you?”
I was shocked he even had to ask the question, and simultaneously shocked I hadn’t seen this coming. Mason tended to worry about things—as in, all things, all the time—and it was adorable. But I never wanted our life together to be one of the things he worried about.
“You just reminded me the house is only donefor now.”
“Yeah.”
“And you seem to be forgetting that you’re building up your medical practice and that I just finally realized a dream of setting up an auto restoration business.”
“Yeah, that’s true, too.”
“And that you fall asleep in my arms every night and wake me up every morning.”
One side of his mouth quirked up. “Yes.”
“And that we have our weekly truth or dare games down at the cove?”
He smiled. “Right, yeah, definitely those.”
“And all that travel we’ve planned, and the puppy you want to get next winter? Baby, how much excitement do you think I can handle?”
“Okay, okay.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m being crazy, aren’t I?”
“Never. You’re just misreading the situation, just like you said I was doing with Con—”
“Oh mygracious!” Olivia cried. “Is that a unicornbounce house? Beside a giant glittering unicorn withtwinklylights? Can it play music while I bounce? Oh, Uncle Con, you’re my favorite uncleforever!”
Mason narrowed his eyes at the giant bouncy castle with the unicorn guarding the entrance currently being inflated on the lawn. “Wait, what? They’re setting up a unicorn bounce house? Mybrotheris?” He turned so we could locate Con and Micah in the crowd. Con wore an incredibly smug, self-satisfied expression as he watched Watt inflate the castle, and Micah rocked on the balls of his feet a littletooexcitedly.
“Hoooooly shit. You were right. They’ve thrown down a gauntlet, and I didn’t even realize.” Mason folded his arms and glanced up at me. “You know what this means, Fenn?”
I shook my head slowly.
