My face hardened as I forced myself not to react to Cassidy’s teasing.
“Hush,” I muttered. “I need to focus.”
“What are we making obvious?” Sam asked with a raised eyebrow. Cassidy was sitting right next to him, meaning that even at a whisper, he heard everything she said.
I cringed.Goddamnit Cass.
“Avery and Devin are dating,” Cassidy blurted out.
“Cass!!”
Suddenly we had theentire table’s attention. Some of the players were shocked, while others shared knowing glances. My face burned red as I realized our thinly veiled flirting over the years may have been more obvious than I realized.
“Oh really? Can’t say I’m surprised,” Sam grinned. “You know, I may have prodded Devin about his thoughts on the ladies here a few months ago. With most of them, he shrugged. But when I mentioned you…well, he denied it like hell. That’s how I knew he was into you.”
The table erupted in laughter, and I covered my face with my palms to avoid exposing my tomato-red face.
Yup. Definitely more obvious than I realized.
The giggling eventually died down, though I knew the gossip wouldn’t for a long time. I shot Devin another quick glance before sinking into my seat.Pay attention,I scolded myself.Focus on Devin tonight at dinner. Not now.
And I did just that for the rest of the afternoon. I engrossed myself in our campaign, studying our scenarios to determine the best use of my spells. I was even able to use aRepairspell to fix a busted wheel on our party’s horse-drawn carriage. We still got ambushed by bandits, but at least we didn’t have to walk on foot to the next town afterward.
The hours flew by, and it was nearly 4 p.m. when I realized I’d chugged my seltzer water too quickly and needed to use the restroom. As I stood up and walked away from the table, I got the first glimpse of Devin’s group that I’d had in a while. He wasn’t at the table, and the boys were currently bickering over who had the fanciest dice set.
The restrooms were right next to the storage room, and I was so lost in thought that I hardly noticed a figure emerge from there. What I did notice was that figure pausing next to me and grabbing my hip.
I jolted, even as my body warmed to histouch.
“Devin,” I hissed under my breath.
He pulled away and stepped backward, a cocky grin on his face, “What? It was an accident.”
“It was not!” I frowned. “We can’t be acting all couple-y in the middle of—!”
He leaned forward and planted a kiss on my cheek, which left me a stuttering, red-faced mess.
“That was also an accident.” He smirked as he walked back towards the gaming tables. “Your cheek was in the way.”
Once Devin was gone and I had recovered from the sudden rush of affection, I scanned the crowd to make sure no one had noticed his antics. All six tables were deeply focused on their game, and not a single pair of eyes were glancing in my direction.
Good,I huffed as I opened the restroom door. But as I finished up and returned to my seat, I couldn’t ignore that feeling. The intoxicating burn of attraction, the all-consuming desire for more; the way his touch seeped into my skin like a healing balm.
I couldn’t help but smile to myself as we wrapped up our session.
Devin was always going to drive me nuts.
And I would always be wanting more of it.
I lingered around the shop afterCreatures & Cryptsended, saying goodbye to my friends while I kept tabs on Devin out of the corner of my eye. A few patrons hung around to make some last-minute purchases, which kept him busy at the register. I kept myself occupied by studying the vast wall of miniatures on the far-left wall, near theWargaveltables. There were hundreds of them. I couldn’t believe Devin had painted them all himself.
The last few bits of chatter died down, and before I could realize we were the last two people in the shop, Devin swept in behind me and pulled me in for a kiss.
I practically melted against the game shop wall as the rest of the world blurred around me. I had needed this all day. I needed this every day.
He broke away, a huge, beaming grin on his face as he stroked my cheek.
“Let me guess,” I taunted. “That was also an accident?”
