Still, the thought made me crinkle my nose a little. Hopefully, hedidn'tlike golden showers.
Since Ethan was there and I didn’t feel like I had to run back out there, I took my time washing my face and brushing my teeth. When I finally emerged, the sound of someone clanking around the kitchen drew my attention.
I followed the noises, stopping in the doorway to see Ethan, with Evie strapped to his chest, moving around the place. Coffee was already brewing as he opened another cupboard.
“Now, where does your daddy keep the pans?” he asked Evie.
“Bottom cupboard on the right of the stove,” I said.
He glanced over at me, grinning.
“She might need to be fed soon,” he said. “But I think she’s happy enough for now.”
I nodded, taking a seat at the table, and watching as Ethan went to work making eggs.
“There’s bacon too,” I informed him, taking advantage of getting a meal cooked for me.
“Say no more,” he said, going to the fridge and rifling through it.
I sat back, watching, a smile plastered to my face.
Of course, the moment the food was placed on the table, Evie started fussing and gesturing for her bottle by bringing her little hands to her puckered lips.
“Aw, bad timing,” I chuckled, but before I could fully stand, Ethan was on his feet again.
“No, you sit. You were up with her for half the night.”
Compared to before, being woken up twice was nothing. Still, I appreciated the gesture. Since there was milk already made in the fridge, it only took Ethan a couple minutes to have it warm and ready. He came back, taking his seat across from me while me and Evie ate.
I watched while he looked down at her, warmth and something like sadness in his gaze.
“She’s so adorable,” he said softly, so I guessed I was misreading him. Why would looking at a baby make anyone sad?
“Do you want to come to the mall with us?” I asked. “I need to get her new clothes. Or we could go for a walk?”
“How about both?” Ethan suggested.
I smiled.
“Sure.”
* * *
We endedup back at West Coast Snuggles instead of the mall and this time, I went almost as crazy as the first time, but with the clothes. All of the outfits were hard to resist. I could so clearly imagine little Evie in any of them. Then there were the shoes! The fact that they were even made so tiny was insane. She had none to begin with, so the next thing I knew, I had five pairs in the basket that would match the outfits I’d picked.
“I’m so excited to dress her!” I said as we left. “It’s so weird.”
“It’s not,” Ethan chuckled. “It’s one of the perks. Until she’s older, you get to decide.”
I laughed.
“My mom insisted on a faux-hawk for me as a kid. Do you remember those?”
Ethan laughed.
“Oh yeah. Everyone had one.”
“Did you?” I asked. “Oh man, teenage Ethan with a faux-hawk, I need to see pictures.”
