Warmth flooded me and I leaned forward, pressing our lips together, shocked that somehow, I’d found someone who truly felt me the way that I felt him.
CHAPTER17
JAIME
The initial shockof Ethan’s past had faded into something warm and beautiful.
I didn’t think I had ever felt so connected to someone. Whenever our eyes met, it felt like being wrapped in a blanket, and whenever he touched me was even better.
He didn’t leave my place until Monday morning when he had to go in to work.
I tucked Evie’s foot into the sparkly slippers I’d bought her. When our eyes met, she smiled... and I nearly screamed.
“Oh my god!” I hollered, lifted her into the air, and spun her around in my excitement. “Evie! That was so sweet!”
She let out a happy gargle and I held her out in front of me.
“One more time, baby! Give me another smile!”
She stared at me.
“Fine,” I chuckled. “Be stubborn, just like Liz.”
Still delighted, I tucked her into her carrier, facing out so that she could look around.
I zipped my jacket up halfway, grabbed my bag, and left into the bright April day.
I hadn’t really noticed how many people smiled and said hi to Evie until today either. The general good vibes fed into my mood and determination. But first, I had to message Ethan.
We’d only been apart for a few hours. I knew he was filming for a while, but I still couldn’t help feeling desperate to hear from him.
Evie smiled at me!
Even typing the word felt surreal. She was growing so fast. I bent, kissing the top of her hat.
“Soon you’ll be sitting up on your own,” I said. It was the most basic skill, but hell, seeing her grow and get stronger was melting my heart already.
She seemed delighted to be out of the house. The bus ride kept her entertained with all the people and lights, but when I got to my destination, the nearest cafe, she was already asleep.
It was true that movement made it impossible for a baby to stay awake, I mused.
It worked for me though.
I ordered a coffee and settled down at a table, pulling out my laptop.
First order of business was one that would make me and Ethan the proudest.
My stomach squirmed while I found the local driving school, The Driving Academy. With a deep breath, I input my details and my card, ignoring the way it made my hands shake.
I was raising a child. I could handle anything.
That was what I told myself anyway. And Ethan had promised that if it was evening or weekend classes, he’d make himself available to watch Evie while I went to them.
Just taking that one step made me feel hugely accomplished. Even though it made my hands shake. I’d done it. I’d signed up and paid. That meant I would be driving soon.
Now, time to move on to another item on the list.
Suddenly my phone vibrated.
