I pulled it out at once, eager for Ethan’s message.
That’s amazing! I can’t wait to see it!
Also, I hope you don’t mind, I contacted a daycare I found for you. I put your details though so they should be calling or emailing soon.
I don’t mind. That’s perfect! Thank you.
Smiling, I crossed “find childcare” off my list.
That left getting my GED, deciding on a field of study, researching colleges and applying, and finding a job in the meantime.
It was all a little bit daunting, but I had a kid now and by the time she was on two feet, I wanted to know that I could care for her properly.
“One step at a time,” I said to myself.
It turned out that there were night courses at the high school. But the idea of returning to Gaynor High at twenty-three made me feel a little bit sick. I’d been so glad to get the hell out of there.
But it would be different this time around, I decided. And for Evie, it would be worth it.
With that in mind, I began the application process.
Job hunting took much longer after that, updating my resume, and taking a break to play with Evie and feed her added, but at least I liked that part.
When my phone started to ring, I picked it up, surprised to see that a couple of hours had already passed.
“Where are you, babe?” Ethan asked. “I’m at your place, but no one’s here.”
“Oh, shit. I didn’t know you were coming over.”
“I kind of invited myself,” he chuckled.
“I’m at Nice Buns,” I said grinning.
“Can I join you?”
“Please do!”
My foot was tapping with anticipation while I waited for him. The moment he walked through the glass doors, my heart leaped.
I stood up to greet him with a kiss and a half hug since I was holding Evie in one arm.
“How was work?” I asked.
He groaned softly.
“Ugh. I’ll tell you about it in a minute. Just let me grab a coffee.”
He pecked my cheek before going to the front, his hand lingering on my back like he didn’t want to stop touching me.
I sat back down, attempting to play it even a little bit cool, but catching his eyes twice when he turned to look at me.
He returned with a coffee and two muffins. He slid one over to me, smiling.
“What are you up to?” he asked.
I turned my computer toward him so he could see.
“Jobs,” I said shrugging.
