They were the ones who knew how to negotiate, and I wasn’t about to dive into this headfirst on my own.
It wasn’t until I found a nearby cafe for dinner that I had a minute to properly catch my breath.
My head was swimming with options but when I sat down and took a breath, I found my thoughts going straight to Jaime.
He would be long done with his driving lesson already. He'd been nervous, but now he was probably proud as hell to have done it. I wished I’d been there to see that excited look in his eyes.
I pulled my phone out, expecting a message from him. Instead, there was one from Arty wishing me luck and a rather ominous text from Naomi.
Check in on your boy.
I stared.
That was it?
Heart racing, I dialed her number instead of texting back.
“What happened?” I demanded the moment I heard the line click.
She chuckled.
“Well, hello to you too,” she said. “How was the meeting?”
“Really good. How is Jaime?”
“Not the best,” she admitted. “He had a panic attack starting the car apparently. The neighbors walked him back in and he had to lie down…”
I didn’t know what to say. The thought of that happening while I wasn’t there just feltwrong.
“Ethan?”
“I'm here,” I managed but I still couldn’t find any words.
“Don’t worry. He was okay after a while. I ordered lunch and stayed with him until he seemed better.”
“Okay... So he’s okay?”
She made a noncommittal sound.
“Kind of. He seems pretty down.”
My heart sank.
“I should be there,” I finally said, softly.
She sighed.
“Jaime seems to think you should be in LA moving on already.”
I frowned.
“He said that?”
“Not in so many words,” she said, clicking her tongue. “But the poor guy seems to be a bit insecure about having people stick around.”
“Yeah, I guess he is,” I agreed. “I hope you told him I wasn’t planning to leave him?”
“I told him,” she said, and I could breathe again. “Kind of hard to convince him while you’re spending the day seeing your new studio though.”
