Think I’ll head to my place so I don’t wake you.
He’d messaged over an hour ago. He was probably back in Gaynor now. Maybe even home already.
I wanted him to be here so badly, but I would have to wait for the morning to get a bear hug from Ethan.
The thought of what tomorrow would bring, of having to face Liz and Evie together nearly made me sick.
CHAPTER22
ETHAN
Jaime hadn’t repliedto me last night. I was guessing that was because he was asleep already.
Even though it was nice to wake up in my big bed for once, it just felt wrong for Jaime to not be next to me, breathing evenly.
I sighed.
One day apart and I was pining for him.
How did people function with feelings like these? It put a lot of crazy behavior from friends over the years into perspective. It also made me realize that until now, I’d never really been in love.
Excitement bubbled within me and I leaped from the bed, took the fastest shower in my life, and got dressed. Within a few minutes, I was in my car, heading to Ethan's place.
I detoured for coffees and donuts and parked on the street, eager to surprise him.
The door was locked when I tried to open it, so I knocked.
After a moment, I heard footsteps approaching. I smiled in anticipation.
Jaime answered, looking a little distracted. He was still in his pajamas, his hair not yet brushed and tangled on one side from sleep.
My heart gave a little flip and without even a hello, I dipped down, catching his lips against mine for a brief kiss.
He blinked.
“Oh. Ethan.”
I raised a brow.Oh, Ethan? If not for the relief in his voice, I would have been offended.
“Were you expecting someone else?” I joked.
He glanced back into the apartment, and then instead of letting me in, stepped out in his bare feet, carefully shutting the door behind himself before stepping eagerly up to me, wrapping his arms around my shoulders and holding on tight.
My hands were full, but I wrapped my arms around him, holding him as my heart raced.
“What happened? Are you okay?”
He nodded with his face still pressed against my neck.
“I’m okay.”
“Evie?”
“She’s okay.”
He drew back enough to meet my gaze. He looked exhausted.
“What is it, Jaime? What happened?”
