She chuckled.
“Fine, fine. I promise.”
Evie let out a cry and Jaime sighed heavily.
“I’ll call you,” he promised and slid out from my half embrace to go attend to his daughter.
“See you,” Liz said, smiling, but when she reached for the door handle, she paused, her head bowed.
“What is it?” I asked.
Liz took a slow breath and turned back around to face me.
“You seem like a nice guy,” she said sincerely. “But Jaime’s had enough people let him down. Don’t be one of them.”
With that, she turned and left.
I stood there for a moment, still staring at the closed door.
I had no intention of letting Jaime down or hurting him in any way, but her words sparked something in me. An idea.
His distrust in this working out came from his past. She was right. Everyone he had loved had let him down—even Liz did it repeatedly.
To give Jaime true confidence inus, maybe I needed to go the extra mile.
CHAPTER27
JAIME
There’s an UBER outside waiting for you.
I paused, reading the message a second time before my gaze flew to the window to see a white Tesla parked with a big UBER sticker on the front.
“What the hell?” I muttered.
Ethan had gone to work in the morning, then insisted on sending Naomi to my place in the afternoon so that I could get out of the house for a bit.
I’d been whining about needing some time to get some stuff done, so had taken the opportunity to go to the cafe and work on my laptop. Now that I’d been here for two hours fiddling with a resume that I probably couldn’t use and browsing jobs that I couldn’t apply for, I was glad for the distraction.
I stood up, quickly packing my things and tossing what was left of my coffee.
What was Ethan planning?
We hadn’t been able to have another date since that first one.
Grinning, I climbed into the cab.
“Hi,” I said.
“Hello,” the driver said, smiling. “Jaime?”
“Yes.”
I tapped a foot as he pulled out, but I couldn’t resist asking.
“Where are we going?”
He raised a brow, then looked at his directions.
