“Uh, it looks like we’re headed to Gaynor Heights. Is that right?”

I nodded, heart starting to race with anticipation.

Ethan, that sneaky bastard had sent his assistant to babysit, then got me a cab to his place. No one but us. No distractions.

I was practically melting and I wasn’t even there yet. I’d never had anyone do something so romantic.

My stomach was a flutter of nerves by the time we arrived at his place.

I thanked the driver and practically ran for the front door.

Ethan was waiting for me because he opened it before I could knock, meeting me as I threw myself into his arms.

He laughed, holding me to his chest for a long minute.

“What is this?” I asked, grinning. “Sneaking me out for a date?”

I pulled back far enough that I could kiss him.

His hands slid into my hair, tilting my head to deepen the kiss until I was a wreck, hard and loose as putty in his arms.

With a groan, he pulled back.

“Wait, not too eager now, we have to speak first.”

That ominous line had me straightening at once, pulling back to look at him properly without excitement blinding me.

“Shit,” I muttered at his obviously nervous expression.

“No,” he murmured, kissing me again. “It’s nothing bad. I hope.”

“Then why did you have to bring me here to talk about it?” I asked, extracting myself from his arms.

Now my heart was racing for a different reason.

He wasn’t acting like he was about to dump me; he’d said notyetto the kissing, after all.

“Is this about that job?” I asked, swallowing. “You’re right, it’s probably time to rip off the bandage... I’ve already prepared myself for anything you might say.”

I tilted my chin, waiting and pretending I was ready to hear about doing this long distance. That seemed like the most obvious solution, and I appreciated that he was probably still going to try to be with me for a while.

Ethan frowned, and stepped up to me, wrapping me in his embrace again.

“Can you please not jump to conclusions?” he asked gently. “I do need to talk to you about that, but there’s something else I want to talk about first.”

His heart thudded against mine and my nerves spiked higher.

“What is it?” I asked nervously.

He swallowed.

“I want to show you something... Oh god, I really hope you don’t hate me for this.”

My eyes widened.

“Ethan, what the hell? Please stop dragging this on. I’m dying here.”

He snorted and released me, but he took my hand.
