My eyes widened.

“I have to call Liz.”

I cleaned up in a rush, quickly pulling my boxers and pants back up and fishing out my phone.

“I paid for that place for the year,” I explained at Ethan’s quizzical look.

His brows shot up.

“Good thinking!”

I bit my lip, excitement blossoming in me.

It was rare for things to just fall into line like this. Maybe that meant it was meant to be.

CHAPTER28

ETHAN

The week Jaimemoved in had been a happy whirlwind. The house had been filled with bags of his belongings, we’d ordered takeout while organizing, and we watched countless movies. It was like fresh life was breathed into the place.

And now, I couldn’t imagine my home without my two loves filling the space.

In the month that had passed, Jaime had already started his GED courses and Evie was already sitting up and interacting even more and I couldn't help doting on her.

She still reminded me of Amelia, but that felt like a good thing now. Remembering her—the short time I’d known her—felt distant and special. For a while, I’d had a little sister and now I got to spoil another baby that was just like her. That felt like kismet and the fact that Icouldfeel that way was unexpected and special in itself.

I glanced in the rearview mirror and found Evie watching me with her big eyes in her rear facing seat’s mirror.

I smiled.

“Hello honey,” I said, “you watching me drive?”

She giggled and I took that as a yes as Jaime swiveled in his seat to look at her.

“Aw,” he cooed. “She’s so damn cute.”

“I know, and is it just me or does she keep getting cuter?”

“She does!” Jaime enthused. “How is that possible?”

“I don’t know!” I laughed.

I pulled my car to a stop in front of his old place. The sun was shining, so of course, the retired couple, Mr. and Mrs. Woo were outside. Mr. Woo was in the garden, his wife sipping tea and reading a book on the porch.

She stood up as soon as our car pulled up.

Jaime shook his head at me, smiling as he climbed out of the car to talk to them while I took Evie out.

“Hi Jaime!” Mrs Woo was saying. “Can I give you that stuff I told you about?”

Apparently, she had been trying to get Jaime to come to collect some baby items that her grandchildren had grown out of.

Jaime had seemed to be in shock at the time, but we were both surprised when she and her husband went inside, emerging a minute later with a big bag of toys and a baby play center.

“Our granddaughter loved this,” she said. “Evie can sit now, right?”

At our nod, she shook her head.
