Kathleen nods her head in agreement.
“I have been speaking with a team of doctors in Boston about your situation. If you give them access to your medical records, they are prepared to work up a plan to get you well again. I will cover all expenses.”
Kathleen’s eyebrows rise in surprise as Chloe lets out a shocked gasp.
“Max, you can’t,” she says, clearly at a loss for words.
“I can,” I say decisively. “What is the point in being a billionaire if you can’t do things like this for the people you love?” I turn back to Kathleen. “Without being indelicate, I can more than comfortably afford any costs that should arise.”
“Does this mean that I would have to move to the States?” Kathleen asks with a guarded look on her face.
“Not necessarily. It would make things easier, but if you are opposed to it, we can narrow our search for treatments to the UK.”
“You are awfully quiet, my dear,” Kathleen says to her daughter.
Chloe's eyes hold unshed tears as she looks from me to her mother. “I just want you to be healthy and happy, mum. I would love it if you came to the US, but that is your decision.”
Kathleen seems to consider what Chloe is saying for a few moments before looking me in the eyes and nodding. “Yes, Maxwell, I will take your offer. I think I would like to see this country you are so fond of, Chloe.”
Chloe bursts into tears and drops my hand to rush to her side. She climbs into the bed with Kathleen, wrapping her arms around her as they both cry. Chloe looks over at me and mouths the words thank you to me.
If things go as planned, we could be heading back to Boston in less than a week.
Chapter 30

Chloe
“Ladies, I will be just a moment,” Max says, holding a ringing phone as he steps out into the hallway.
We both watch him walk out the door and close it quietly behind him before I turn back to my mom.
“Okay, what do youreallythink?”
Mum pauses for a few seconds and it takes all the patience I have not to urge her to speak.
“I think I like him,” she says finally.
A whoosh of breath escapes my lungs. “That is a relief.”
“Did you think I was going to hate him, love?”
“No, I suppose not. But I was just worried, you know? I really like him, mum. Actually, if I am being honest, love him.”
“I can see that, darling. It is obvious to anyone who looks at you that you are besotted. And he is as well, if what he says is the truth.”
I nod with tears in my eyes.
“I never thought I would see the day,” my mum says with a large smile on her face.
“What? That is rude!”
My mother chuckles before patting the bed for me to sit next to her. I do as she asks, enjoying the closeness. If I am to believe Max, I am going to get much more time with her like this back in Boston. It is weird to imagine my mother in the US, but good weird. I look forward to more quality time with her.
“I always assumed that you would find someone to share your life with, sweetheart. But you are so independent. I wasn’t sure if it would happen in my lifetime.”
I suppose she is right. She nearly died the last time she went through her cancer treatments, and now she is sick again.
