“We have to get out of here, now,” Holden says, grabbing my hand as people start to swarm around us.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” I glare at him as he stoops to pick up the flash drive that was still attached to the laptop on the floor near his the wallet. I hope that I sound bold because I am absolutely terrified and acting braver than I feel.

Holden gets in my face, his eyes narrowing. “Here’s the deal, Hannah. You can either come with me now, or you can stay here and deal with this shit. Quite frankly, I don’t care either way, but my life is going to be a whole lot easier if you just come with me.”

I snatch my hand out of his grip. “I just told you that I’m not going anywhere with you.”

People begin to approach us, closing in around us. My eyes burn with the threat of tears. All the attention is on us, and I can’t get the thought that I slept with a man who beats up random people in the street out of my head.

What the fuck has my life come to? Maybe I should just tell Audrey that I can’t watch her house and go back to my own home where everything is a lot less complicated.

It might not be all that far away, but I wouldn’t be surrounded by the reminders of everything that I have failed to do in my life and reminders of him.

“Last chance, Hannah.” He holds his hand out to me.

“I’m not coming with you,” I announce.

I look at all the people surrounding us again, their questions and shouts blurring together into a jumble of words.

As I slip my hand into his, I can’t help but wonder if I’m making a massive mistake or starting the adventure of a lifetime.

Leap of faith, Hannah. Be more like the heroines in the books you write.

Chapter Four

Holden

Hannahstaresatmelike I’m a complete stranger as I lead her into the safe house. I can’t blame her for that. She just watched me fight with two men. One of those men grabbed her.

I didn’t know what he was going to do to her, and it made me see red. I ripped him off of her without a care in the world about what would happen to him.

In the process, I scared her.

It’s better that she finds out who you are now. It’ll be easier to keep your distance from her if she sees you for the monster that you really are.

“Where are we?” she asks as she looks around skeptically.

“In one of my apartments,” I lie. “You’ll be safe here,” I added.

I pace around the safe house — a space I’ve come to know intimately thanks to numerous covert missions, a sense of familiarity envelops me. The room has secure vibe to it, with its plain furniture and subdued colors hiding its actual nature.

I make sure that everything is secure, as Hannah stands in the living room with her arms wrapped around her waist. I peak at her through the doorway in the kitchen before going to the sink and spitting out another mouthful of blood.

I’m probably going to need stitches.

When I finish checking the house, I head back into the living room. Hannah takes a step back and looks around like she is trying to find the nearest exit.

“Are you okay?” I ask as I open up a cupboard and take out a rag. I hold the rag against the cut on my lip that won’t stop bleeding.

She looks at me with wide eyes. “Are you really asking me that right now? After what just happened?”

“So,” I say, grinning as I look at her. “The snark comes out when you’re drinking or pissed off with me. That’s good to know. I’m going to make it a habit to piss you off more often.”

She glares at me. “Are you really making a joke right now?”

“Hannah, I’m going to be honest with you. Nothing about this is a joke and what you saw back there puts me in a very difficult position.”

The difficult position part definitely isn’t something I’m lying about. She saw something that she never should have seen. Hannah got a good look at the men I had fought and they got a good look at her too. They definitely know that she’s my weak link.
