“Holden, whatever it is you want to say about this, just spit it out.” Hannah gives me an encouraging smile, as she gets up and gathers the plates, taking them over to the sink.

When she comes back to the table, I’m teetering on the edge of my seat. I’m torn between thinking that asking her to get a place with me is the best idea I’ve ever come up with or the worst.

“What do you think about getting a place together?” The words come out in a rush as she sits down across from me. “We could have separate bedrooms, but I would be there to help you with Kerri whenever you need it.”

“You want to be roommates?” she asks, her tone filled with disbelief. She bites her bottom lip and looks out the window.

Her hesitation is clear, and I can understand why. I’m not known for having been involved with Kerrigan’s life or Hannah’s. Even though I want to get to know everything about both of them, Hannah is going to do what she thinks is best.

Which I can’t argue with. I love how protective she is of our daughter. If I had to have a baby with anyone, I’m glad it’s Hannah. I know I don’t have to worry about Kerrigan with her.

“I think it could be beneficial for both of us. I would be around to help you with Kerrigan. We could all get to know each other. I can do a lot of my work from home, so you would also have time to work on your book. Even when I have to go into the office, I can take Kerri with me.”

Hannah nods, the gears turning in her mind. She gets up to pace as I sit back in my chair, my heart hammering in my chest. I don’t want to say anything else and make her say no.

When she slowly smiles, hope begins to flow through me. Hannah exhales hard and looks around at the house.

“As much as I love living with my sister, Preston, and Teddy, I know it’s a lot for all of them. They’re all great at helping with Kerri, but I feel like it’s time to start working on building a life outside of here. One where Kerri has all the space she needs to grow.”

“You’ll move in with me then?” I try not to let hope get ahead of the situation, but it’s hard.

I want to move in with her and raise our little family more than I’ve wanted anything else in the world. Far more than I ever wanted to become a spy.

This feels like the next step in my life, and it’s one I’m ready to take.

“We’ll move in with you.” Hannah stops pacing to take a deep breath. “Please don’t make me regret this, though.”

I get up and pull her into a tight hug. “You’re not going to. I’ll call my realtor and we can start looking at apartments this afternoon.”

Hannah’s eyes grow wide as we step through the doors of the fifth penthouse apartment we’ve looked at this afternoon. I’ve been letting her do most of the looking. I don’t care where we live as long as my girls are with me and happy.

“Look at these floors!” Hannah gestures to the pale oak floors that run throughout the main entryway and down the hall to the right. “This is amazing.”

“The whole apartment has these floors running through it,” Blake, the realtor, says as he grins. “I’m going to leave the two of you alone to look around. When you’re done, I’ll be waiting right here.”

Hannah nods and takes off into the living room. I follow behind her, grinning when she gasps. Windows stretch from floor to ceiling, giving a stunning view of The Golden Gate Bridge.

“There is no way that we can afford this place,” Hannah says, turning to look at the kitchen.

She stares at the black cabinetry and the brushed gold fixtures. Her eyes widen as she walks over to run her hand along the butcher block countertop. Even though she says that the place is too expensive, her smile stretches from one side of her face to the other.

“Money isn’t an issue.” I join her over in the kitchen. “Where is the fridge?”

Hannah crosses the kitchen to open a pair of double doors. Instead of a fridge, like I was expecting, she reveals a butler’s pantry. “This is going to be perfect for a coffee bar. And there’s another door in here too.”

She heads inside and through the other door. I follow behind her, already knowing that we’re done looking at apartments.

The butler’s pantry opens into a bigger pantry with more than enough room to stock up on a store’s worth of food. Hannah looks over her shoulder at me. I can see the hesitation in her eyes. She wants this apartment, but she doesn’t want to say it.

“Come on,” I say as I head back into the kitchen. “We can find the fridge later. I want to get a look at the bedrooms and see what we’re going to be working with.”

I take a second to stand in front of the windows and look at the massive balcony that stretches the length of the wall. It’s got an outdoor kitchen setup that will be the perfect place for entertaining.

As we walk down the hall and take a look at the bedrooms, I keep waiting for Hannah to say something. Her smile is contagious, but all she does is nod and move onto the next room.

When we finally get back to the main hall, Blake looks at us with a grin. He glances at me, and I nod. This is going to be the place where Hannah and I build our family.

“So,” Blake says as he returns his attention to Hannah. “What did you think of the place?”
