I nod and sit down beside her. “I can understand that. I’m not the easiest person to be around either. Sorry I was taking so long. I came out for a smoke. Thought I would be back before you even noticed I was gone.”
She glances at me before watching the cars driving down the street. “It’s fine. I needed some air anyway. Everything about being in there feels stifling.”
I feel bad for lying to her. This isn’t the way I want to start anything with her.
She looks at me, mischief dotting her eyes. “Do you want to get out of here and do something else?”
I chuckle and shake my head. “I might not know most of the people in there either, but you know at least some of them. It’s your sister’s wedding. You’re going to be upset years down the road if you miss such a big moment in her life.”
Hannah frowns and picks at her nails. “I’ve been here for hours already.”
I hook a finger beneath her chin and tilt her head back gently so she’s looking at me. I don’t know who made this woman feel like she has to hold herself back, but I want to do everything in my power to make her see that there is nothing wrong with her being who she is.
“We’re going to march back in there and we’re going to have a great time.” I smile as a soft shade of pink rushes across her cheeks. “Take it from someone who knows what it’s like to miss out on a lot of family events. You’re going to want to stay at your sister’s wedding, trust me.”
She bites her bottom lip as her gaze connects with mine. I use my thumb to pull that plump lip out, my heart racing a mile a minute.
“Come on, Hannah. What’s the worst that could happen?”
She rolls her eyes and gets to her feet. “You don’t know my family. I’ve been asked about the state of my uterus and when I’m going to meet a nice guy and have a baby, like my sister.”
“I promise not to ask about your reproductive abilities,” I say as I climb the stairs and take her hand. “However, I am curious about meeting the nice guy part.”
“Are you a nice guy, Holden? she asks.
“I’m not,” I reply. “I have done terrible things,” I add.
She stares at me with a soul piercing gaze before she takes a deep breath and looks up at the doors. “I don’t know if I can do this.”
“You can’t do any worse than I’m going to do. The only dance I know is the one MJ is known for.” “The moonwalk?” She bursts out laughing, her entire face turning a bright shade of red when people look at her. Hannah retreats into her little shell as she shakes her head.
“You’ve got to be kidding. You don’t know the name of your favorite dance?”
“I haven’t stepped on the dance floor in ages,” I sigh.
“You have to know more than just the moonwalk.”
I cross my heart as I lead her inside. “I’m telling you. The only dance I’ve ever learned is the moonwalk. I might be able to do something else but it will require your assistance.”
“And what might that be?” she asks.
“Me grinding you from behind, your dress is perfect for it.”
Hannah’s hand flies up over her mouth to smother another laugh as we enter the reception.
“I’m going to go request my favorite song,” I say, grinning at her as the gears start turning in my mind and a plan begins to form.
If she is so worried about what everyone else thinks of her, I’m going to give everyone something to talk about for the rest of the night.
“Why don’t you go get another glass of champagne and I’ll meet you by the bar for a dance?”
She nods and looks at me. I can see the suspicion in her eyes, but the corner of her mouth tips up into a smile. “Alright.”
As I’m walking away, my phone starts buzzing in my pocket. Dread rushes through me as I picture leaving her alone and going out to deal with business. I pull out my phone, hoping that the meeting is cancelled and I can spend more time with Hannah.
UNKNOWN: MEETING IS POSTPONED. TOMORROW AT 10 AM. BE READY. HANDOFF NEEDS TO OCCUR WITHOUT PROBLEM THIS TIME.
Relief washes over me as I tuck the phone back into my pocket. I’m going to be able to stay with Hannah and make sure that she enjoys the rest of her sister’s wedding.
