“Baby, I praise Him every day I wake up and get to see your pretty face. I’m trying to see that shit all the time, mama.”
“If you keep spoiling me, you’re going to have to let me do the same.”
“Just give me you. That’s all I ask.”
I smiled and walked up to him, sliding my tongue in his mouth. He instantly gripped my ass and smacked it.
After a few seconds I pulled away.
“Yeah, ya ass better be at my house as soon as you clock out.”
“There’s no clocking out. I work twenty-four-hour shifts with you.”
“You better say that shit.” I laughed as I turned and left his office.
One Week Later. . .
I didn’t think I’d see his ass around for a while. Our last encounter wasn’t so pleasant, and I wasn’t ready to forgive him for the shit he pulled. But alas, here we were. My moms summoned me over, with the false pretense that she needed my help setting up her bookshelf in her library.
When I got here and saw that she had Denver putting it up, I got irritated about her setting me up. The bum didn’t look as if he was any type of remorseful. The asshole actually had a smile on his face as if nothing ever happened between us.
Now, we were sitting out on my parents’ patio, with my moms and pops, to settle whatever beef we had.
I wasn’t settling shit.
“What is going on with you two, Avery? Denny told us that you two fought at the anniversary party and that you fired him,” my moms said while I stared at his tattle-telling ass.
“Did he tell you about all the disrespectful shit he’s been doing since I opened my company?”
He sucked his teeth and waved me off. “I’m the one who made his company as successful as it is now, and he never gives me any credit for the things I’ve done, Auntie.”
“What have you done, my guy, besides your fucking job?”
“AJ! Language.”
“I’m sorry, Ma, but your nephew is a jealous, arrogant, and disrespectful person, and he should tell you the real reason we got into the fight in the first place.”
“You hit me and fired me over a broad you’d only known for a millisecond! I’m your blood, nigga! I was there to help you build that company?—”
“You didn’t help me build shit! That was me and Emani who got out there making deals and puttingourmoney into building that empire. What dollar did you spend to makeAromatiquewhat it is today? You tell me that, and I’d gladly give you your job back.” He waved me off. “Exactly.”
“Look, at the end of the day, you are family. Shouldn’t no woman come in between that,” my pops said.
“It was the principle, Pa. He doesn’t respect me or my boundaries. I told him that she and I were an item, and he still tried to pursue her. Touching her inappropriately, knowing that was the main reason we almost had a lawsuit.”
“Denver, . . . I thought we talked about that.”
“I didn’t think he was serious, Pa. Me and Av been tossing these chicks up since we were in high school. But as soon as he started building this empire, he started acting different.”
“I’m a grown ass man now, Denny. When my business grew, so did my palate for different shit. We’re not in high school no more, bruh. Your mind is stuck in the yesteryears, while everyone else has moved on. You’re smart as fuck, but you’re still childish mentally. Grow the fuck up.
“I’m looking for a wife to start building a family. Someone I can leave all this to when I pass on. I ain’t trying to beef with you, but until you give a genuine apology, I don’t want you around me, my business, or my fucking lady.”
“I’m not apologizing for shit. I did nothing wrong. You’re the one that should be apologizing for putting your hands on me.”
I scoffed and stood. “Then it’s done. I have nothing else to say to you. Ma, Pa, I’ll see y’all later.” I walked back through the patio doors, leaving them to it. Denver had some growing up to do. Until he did, I had nothing else to say to his punk ass.
My eyes opened to the darkness of the room. I had to have been sleep for hours, because it was daylight when I came home and decided to take a nap. I was exhausted from working around the clock, trying to get our product in more stores.
