“You think I was followed?” She shifted her eyes from one to the other.
“It’s possible. Or you could be a target.”
I didn’t need the connection to know something she’d been through troubled her. “Dr. Blackwell. I know he’s been watching me.”
“Do you have a place we can go?” Kai asked.
She bit her lip, shaking her head for a few seconds. “Yes, I do. It’ll be safe. I need to change and you need clothes. Of course you don’t have any with you.”
“We do not have time,” I gritted out.
“You’re going to need to make time. The last thing we need is for another driver to see three naked men inside my car. That would be considered strange enough to call the police about. And contrary to what you might be thinking, I can’t ride on oneof your backs when you’re a… wolf. That’s not practical in the least.”
I allowed a smirk to twitch across my lips while she stared at me defiantly.
“She’s right,” Roman said in his usual quiet voice. “We can’t draw attention. Not now. Not until we know what we are dealing with.” His own defiance was annoying but correct.
“By all means. Go change. However, I wouldn’t think you’ll find anything suitable for us to wear.”
She smiled as wryly as I’d done earlier. “Bet me, big man. I’ll be right back. Five minutes.”
When she left the room, Kai quirked an eyebrow. “Big man? Humans are fascinating.”
“Especially our mate.” I moved toward the back patio door, unlocking it and slipping outside. There was a significant stench in the air. I could smell blood. There’d been other acts of violence committed in the last twenty-four hours.
Even having the thoughts of the scientist stored in the back of my mind didn’t provide enough information. I’d gathered Savannah’s thoughts as well, the day’s experience at the laboratory planted firmly in my mind.
Through her eyes I was able to capture an image of some piece of laser equipment and the lifeforms behind a pane of glass.
Kai joined me seconds later, leaning over the railing, as lost in thought as I was. We were thinking the same thing.
Where the hell to go from here? Not just for a few days of safety, but for the foreseeable future. I had no answers and that wasn’tanything I was used to. I’d become accustomed to controlling everything around me. Wolves. Locations. The food source. I’d been able to avoid facing danger dozens of times, keeping my pack safe.
