Now they were all alone. Soon, other wolves would realize their alpha had disappeared.

“They won’t survive,” Kai said as if to answer my concern.

“My pack is strong.”

“Maybe not strong enough for whatever this is. What if this is only the beginning?” He cocked his head in my direction.

“I don’t know.” Another first. I had no clue. It would annoy and anger me until I could grasp the situation. “What I do know is that we’re not safe. Certainly not while staying near to the laboratory.”

He nodded. “You need to realize there might not be anywhere on this earth that’s completely safe for us.”

I slowly tilted my gaze toward him. “Then we better learn. We will not abandon our mate.”

“I know. We’ll protect her with our lives.”

“She’s ready,” Roman said from behind us.

With a slight shake of my head, I had to admit I was curious as to what clothes she’d found.

She was holding a stack in her hands. She’d changed into jeans, a rugged shirt, the boots I’d seen her wear, and she’d hurriedly tied her long hair into a braid. A braid I wanted to hold and pull when I bred her.

The scent of her heat was stronger than even a day before. That would become an issue for all three of us soon enough. At that point, breeding her would become the only thing on our minds.

Another dangerous possibility.

“This is all I had. Sweatpants. They should fit, at least enough to keep the three of you from being arrested. I’ll stop on the way to where we are going. To get some cash and to purchase some clothes. I’ll guess at your sizes.” The corners of her mouth uplifted from a spark of amusement.

“Cash,” Roman repeated.

Her nod was followed by her tossing a pair of sweatpants to each of us. “Yes. I might be wrong, but I don’t want to leave a trace of where we’re going that anyone can follow. Credit cards will do that. Do you know what those are?” She laughed nervously and tugged a single strand of hair behind her ear. “That’s right. You have knowledge from the scientist. I can only imagine what education that has given you. When we get to the car, just get inside. I’ll drive.”

“Where are we going?” I asked. Her mind was processing formulas and test results, one after the other. The thoughts were random, drowning out any conscious train of thought.

“Just outside Baltimore. We’ll be safe at my parents’ house. They’re gone for two more weeks traveling in Italy. No one knows where the house is. My dad used to work for the CIA. He likes his privacy and security. That will help.”

As she moved toward the door, her breath more labored than I’d seen it, all I could think about was that she was a goddamned vision.

But in that vision, I also witnessed something disturbing.

Death.

CHAPTER 13

Kai

“What the fuck was with all the flashing red and blue lights?” My question was met by a laugh coming from the backseat.

“Emergency vehicles. Specifically in this case, they are from police cars who are currently on a chase or hunting down a suspect or even a person exceeding the speed limit as allowed by the laws of the United States.”

Roman’s response brought a quick snort from Apollo.

“A walking, talking encyclopedia,” I muttered as I drummed my fingers on the dashboard. My legs were jammed against the console, my muscles aching. Savannah’s vehicle was too damn small for the four of us.

“You asked. I answered,” Roman quipped.

“I know what they are. We all do since it would seem our host had difficulty maintaining the speed limit. I meant why are thereso many of them flying down the road.” It was night, the moon yet to lift to the center of the sky. Timing was entirely different as humans than as wolves.

Apollo leaned forward. “They’re also hunting.”
