“Settle down. You can have an opinion, but you will respect mine and not go behind my back on this. For their sake, we can’t rush into anything.” She does make a good point again. “Besides, Brielle was born first, so wouldn’t that make her your heir?”
I’m speechless for a moment. I just assumed that Remi was older and would be the heir since it is always a son who takes over. Fuck! Would I want to put Brielle in that position? She should be treated as a princess and then a queen, just not of a less-than-legal organization.
I want both of my children not to have to be a part of this world, but if one had to, I automatically thought of Remi. This world isn’t friendly to women. But I guess if Brielle wanted to, she could take over.
We would have to hide this from both our families; they are too old school. My father thinking of a woman taking over his precious business just might give him a heart attack. Actually, that wouldn’t be the worst idea, and I wouldn’t mourn him. He has been a thorn in my side my whole life.
“Rex, are you okay?” I feel her hand on my face. I didn’t even hear her come close to me. “Talk to me. We need to be a team.”
What did I do to deserve this woman?“I just was thinking how my father would lose it thinking of a woman taking over. You know how he is.” She doesn’t need a reminder of his sexism, as she experienced it first hand while growing up.
He is the kind of guy who will tell women to make him a sandwich and stay where they belong. My mother has self-medicated with prescription medications and alcohol my whole life, as I got older I understood why.
I do not want Bella or Brielle to live that kind of life. I want them to be happy and not feel the need to find ways to cope with their daily lives. Remi too, he may be a boy, but that doesn’t make him any less important. They deserve the world and so much more. I will never be good enough, but I will try my hardest to be better every day.
Letting go of my face she steps back. “Can we just not tell him ever? Or it could wait until after you take over since I’m guessing Cole won’t be alive to take over soon.” I wish it were that easy.
“Who else knows? Did you tell anyone before I came to your room?” I don’t trust anyone not to share this information with my father or Cole. The last thing we need is to add fuel to the fire. This has become my number one priority.
“I didn’t tell anyone. So just you, Josh, and D?” A look of panic crosses her face, “You don’t think your father or Cole would try and kill them, do you?”
“They’ll be fine. They can stay home from school until everything with my brother is done if needed. I’ll get them the best tutors available.”Whatever it takes. “Why don’t you go to bed and try and get some rest?”
“I’m not going to bed until you do; you need rest, too.” Her look of determination has me trying not to smile. She’s so cute when she gets like this. My fierce little daisy.
“There’s nothing you can do until morning anyway. As for the twins, there’s no way to explain a sudden absence to them; they’ll know something is up.” Her lip sticks out in a cute little pout.
“Fine, but let me talk to Josh and D first. Make sure they know the importance of keeping this quiet. I’ll meet you upstairs.” Iturn her towards the door and give her butt a smack. I cannot wait to take my belt to that beautiful ass of hers.
She lets out a squeal but doesn’t argue. She instead looks back as she walks through the door and winks at me. I can’t help but bite my bottom lip watching her walk away. I have a feeling we won’t be sleeping much tonight if I go up there.
I pull out my phone and text the guys to come to my office. While I wait for them, I go back to Josh’s computers and stare at everything that proves Remi and Brielle are mine. I am so excited but nervous. I hope they don’t hate me.
Holy shit! I’m a father; I have a family.I need to protect them at all costs. I may have missed out on many essential parts of their lives, but I won’t now. I will be there for everything physically possible.
My office door closing jars me from my thoughts. I see my men come through the door looking tired and in pajamas.
“Did I interrupt your beauty sleep?” I know they have been working like crazy for me, but I have to bust their balls somehow. What kind of boss would I be if I didn’t?
“Sorry, boss, I’m beat from earlier,” D sounds exhausted, looks it too. His feet are dragging as he walks and his eyes are droopy.
“I was kidding, don’t worry. I know you’ve been doing a lot for me lately.” Speaking of, “Did you finish up in the basement earlier?”
D nods his head, “I did. I called the cleaner you prefer and had them deal with it. I didn’t think it was a good idea to do it myself as I was falling asleep after.”
“That sounds good. With your head injury that was a good call. As long as he suffered, that’s all I care about. Sit on the couch. We need to talk about something important.” I look at Josh. “You too.” They need to know I don’t care who they are to me because this trumps even them.
“Everything okay, boss?” Josh looks nervous as he sits. I'm rarely this stern.
“Yes, Bella and I had a good talk, and we decided that we weren’t going to tell the kids just yet. They have had enough going on lately, and I need to figure everything out with my brother and that crazy bitch Amara.” It seems life likes to throw everything at me at once. I don’t even want to think about the shitstorm dealing with my father will be.
“I take that as you don’t want anyone at all to know? I think that would be the best move as well.” D is always thinking ahead. That’s why he is my go-to guy when I need to talk things through. A leader is only as good as their team.
“Exactly. I don’t need to give my brother more ammunition against me. I need to get on the offense instead of trying to play catch up.” I want his head on a stake at my gate to show everyone what happens when you mess with me. It doesn’t matter who you are; you will pay.
“I was trying to track his phone, but since he was at the bunker, it’s been offline, so he must have destroyed it.” Josh walks over to his computer and starts typing while talking. “I did pull up some of his past frequented places, figured we could check them out if you wanted.”
“Good idea. In the morning, we will get teams ready and split up. If we can hit each place simultaneously, we may have a better chance. Let’s get a couple of hours of sleep. We’ll need to be rested to be at our best and not fuck up.” Maybe we are finally getting somewhere instead of being blindsided constantly.
