“Is it urgent? I’m busy.”

He gestures vaguely.

Vasilisa is quicker to be kind, sliding off the desk, she presses her hands softly to Santo’s chest until he sits on his office chair.

His hands reach for her pulling her to his lap.

“I think we can spare a moment, Santo.”

She addresses him softly, gentle, like he’s deserving. Her eyes shining on him. He softens under her gaze.

She glances at me curiosity lighting her up.

“What is it you need to tell us?”

I take a breath, forcing myself to look Santo in the eye. His hands slide up and down Vasilisa’s waist gently, but his stare at me is hard.

“I’m married.”

The silence is instant.

Thick.

Santo stills.

His expression unchanged.

Then he mutters, “Congratulations.”

Vasilisa’s eyes widen.

“Married? When did this happen?” She glances at Santo as if searching for confirmation.

Santo shrugs.

He pulls her closer, his nose buried in her hair.

He’s so strange with her.

He pulls away his eyes on her as he speaks to me then scoffs. “Who is the unlucky woman?”

My mouth twitches at his dry tone.

“Scarlet.”

“Scarlet,” Vasilisa repeats softly.

She looks between Santo and me her eyebrows furrowed. “Do we know her?”

Santo’s grip on Vasilisa unconsciously tightens, the tension between us thick.

“She’s the woman I told you about Tiny, the one in Florida.”

Vasilisa lights up, “Oh that’s so wonderful!”

She claps lightly, turning her beaming smile towards Santo.

His gaze is on me. Heavy.Angry.
