“I know that, and I’m also not stupid. You aren’t making money twenty-four seven, and you’ve got to be having sex with somebody.”

“If you and me aren’t in a relationship, and if I’m not having sex with you, then why does it matter if I am?”

Anger flickered in Connie’s eyes. “So you are having sex with someone else. Now that you found somebody else, it’s fuck me, huh?”

“You wanted to have sex with me like I wanted to have sex with you. We had sex. That doesn’t mean we have to keep doing it.”

“Wow,” she sucked her teeth. “You’re just like every other jailbird out here.”

I kept my mouth shut. She was angry and more than likely going to try and hit below the belt. I wasn’t about to go back and forth with her, and I still didn’t want to hurt her feelings, but Aubree came first. I didn’t want her to think I was being disrespectful.

“I’m sorry if I went about things the wrong way. You really are cool people, but we gotta wrap this convo up. My girl is out here, and we’ve been talking a little too long.”

Connie glared at me, and I wasn’t sure if she wanted to slap me or if she was about to burst out crying. I saw Aubree sauntering over, and all I could do was shake my head. She wasn’t a confrontational person, but I could only guess how things were about to go. She walked past Connie with a smile on her face.

“I’m about to leave.”

“Okay. Come here.” She walked into my personal space, and I kissed her. “This is, Connie. She was a correctional officer where I was locked up at.”

Aubree had just smiled at her when Connie’s lips parted. “And we had sex twice when he came home.”

Aubree chuckled. “Okay. Congratulations, I guess. Bye Brasi,” she chuckled again and walked off.

“I hope you end up right back in prison,” Connie hissed and once again, I shook my head.

“That’s not nice, shorty. I wish you nothing but the best.”

“Go to hell.”

I wasn’t laughing at her, but I had to chortle as she stormed off. Maybe I shouldn’t have ghosted her. A commotion broke out, and I gave my attention to the crowd that was gathered. The game was over, but there were still kids present. The fact that people were fighting was disgusting.

“Aye,” I called out to two boys who appeared to be around the age of twelve. “Nah, don’t go over there,” I walked toward them. “You never run toward a fight.” The moment the words left my mouth, shots rang out. Ducking, I grabbed both boys’ arms and pushed them in front of me. We all took off running.

“Who you out here with?” I asked out of breath as we hit the parking lot.

“We walked. We live around the corner.”

“Get in the car. I’m taking you home.”

I wasn’t sure what happened, and I didn’t care. I was getting the hell out of dodge.

CHAPTER 15

AUBREE

Four months later…..

All I heard was cheering as I ran toward the end zone with the football clutched tightly in my hand. We only needed three points to win the game and if I got a touchdown, the six points it earned would put us over that. The only thing that kept playing on a loop in my brain was, don’t fumble this ball.Running as fast as my legs would carry me, I made it across the goal line. People in the stands cheered, and my teammates ran over and hugged me.

It was my first game since being shot, and I had the time of my life. Between The Hellcat Barbies and the football team, I knew so many dope women that were girls’ girls. We didn’t play anywhere near as rough as men, so we didn’t wear helmets. I’d been playing for two years and there had never been any injuries besides a sprained ankle or maybe a broken finger. After talking with my teammates for a minute, I walked off the field, and Brasi was waiting for me.

“Great game, baby,” he grinned.

“Thank you.”

He wrapped one arm around my neck. “I know you’re hot and sweaty and ready to go home, but I have two surprises for you.”

I smiled so hard my cheeks hurt because if it was one thing that I loved it was surprises. “What?”
