“Good.” He sighs too.

We relax for a while but then I get closer and feel his hardness nudging against me. It occurs to me that I’m being selfish. I reach for him, intending to return the favor but his big hand clamps over mine, stopping me.

I look up and see a conflicted look on his face.

“No, kitten,” he rumbles.

“But…but don’t you want…” I look up at him uncertainly. “I mean, you’re really hard.”

“I know, but we need to be careful.”

I bite my lip as guilt rushes in.

“Because I’m still married to Dirk, right?”

He nods.

“Even though he abandoned you, yes. That’s part of it, anyway.”

“What’s the other part?” I ask, frowning.

Logan sighs again and shifts against me.

“I know you don’t know much of anything about the Were world but we have two rules we all live by. We call them the Unbreakable Laws.”

“You do? What are they?” I ask.

“First one is ‘no breeding in fur form,’” he tells me. “Meaning, you don’t breed a female while your Wolf is out.”

I think of how big his Wolf is and my eyes get wide.

“Oh my God—I can’t believe you have to have a rule about that! I mean, your Wolf is so big he’d split me in half!”

“Which is why I would never let him breed you,” he says patiently. “I would never do anything that could hurt you, baby.”

“Thank you.” I nuzzle my face against the side of his bare chest. He smells so good—he makes me feel so safe. “So what’s the second law?”

“No Breeding with family,” he says. “And according to Were tradition, that means anyone even remotely associated with your clan.”

“But even though I’m married to Dirk, there are no blood ties between us,” I point out. “You’re my brother-in-law—not my brother.”

“Doesn’t matter.” Logan shakes his head. “Sister-in-law is the same as sister. That’s one reason I could never breed you.”

“But…who would ever know?” I ask. “I mean, not that I want you to breed me—that would be wrong, but?—”

“Exactly—it would be wrong. Which is why we can’t go there and we need to be careful with how far we go,” he says firmly. “I don’t mean I didn’t enjoy massaging you—or that I regret making you come.” He lifts my chin with one finger, looking down into my eyes. “I want to do everything I can to make you feel good, Poppy. I want to watch over you and the baby and protect you both and be sure you have a good, healthy pregnancy. But at the same time, we can’t go too far. Do you understand?”

I bite my lip.

“Yes, I understand,” I say in a small voice.

I was feeling so good—so safe and happy and warm and comfortable. But now I feel guilty and wrong. I don’t want to make Logan break the laws of his people. Well, I guess technically they’re my people too but it doesn’t really feel that way.

Logan seems to pick up on my mood.

“I’m sorry, kitten—I didn’t mean to make you feel bad,” he rumbles. “We just need to be careful, that’s all.”

“I understand,” I tell him. And at the moment, I’m definitely not being careful. I’m sprawled out naked in his arms—I need to get back to my own room. “I think I’d better go,” I tell him. “I don’t think we should sleep together like this.” I nod down at myself, blushing. I felt so free when he was massaging me but now I’m ashamed again.
