“I’m not telling you anything else, princess.”

“Carlos, I can’t be friends with you anymore if you don’t change who you are.”

“Who the hell gave you the right to think that you can decide on what kind of person I should be? Why now? Because you feel like it? You’re only doing this because of Bright Rock!”

“Actually, I may have lost my scholarship. The admissions team probably saw the apology video I made and stopped returning my emails. I screwed myself over without realizing it. But hey, whatever. I accept it. I hate it, but I accept it.”

Carlos sighed and shook his head.

“When did you become the biggest idiot ever? You’re just gonna give in to cancel culture just like that? You’re a pathetic, little drone,” Carlos added.

“Thanks, Carlos. That’s sweet of you."

“I want you to remember something, Jacob. You’re not any different. You haven’t changed. You’re just hiding it. You’re still that guy who’s so angry and so full of himself that he leaked the nudes of a girl who rejected him. You’re a pathetic loser who can’t handle getting rejected. I need you to never forget that.”

I chose to stay quiet as he stomped away. No matter our history together, I had to get away from him. There was no changing who I was if I didn’t change who I surrounded myself with. If he wasn’t willing to change, then so be it.

Ultimately, I decided I needed a change of scenery and transferred schools just for a few months anyway, until my senior year ended.

I kept Carlos’s secret for now. I wanted to purge my mind of all the insane drama, backstabbing, and betrayals that had occurred at Brightwood High. It was the only chance I had at keeping focused for the remainder of the school year to keep my college dreams afloat for the foreseeable future—I had a lot of work to do on that front.

Before I left everyone behind for a while, there was one last thing I had to do.

CHAPTER 27

HEATHER

After I listened to Indira’s voice message, my soul left my body. She had beenangel66all along.

There were so many things I didn’t understand. I needed to clear things up, so I decided to hear it straight from the source.

Any and all attempts to call and text Indira were completely useless. She changed her number after she suddenly left Brightwood High. Herangel66social media profile was also deleted, and there were no other traces of any other social media accounts, so I asked Jacob for help. He and Manny managed to find Indira’s new house address after searching through the school’s database. This was Manny’s way of apologizing.

It was a two-hour drive that I planned to make during the weekend with Vivian.

We were uncharacteristically quiet almost the whole way over there. Vivian tried to talk with me on occasion, but my mindwas drifting through the clouds in the sky. I thought about all the possible outcomes of the encounter and mentally prepared myself for each and every one.

Once we arrived, we were both sweaty and exhausted. We put the air conditioning on full blast in the car, as we both decided to take a nap through the night.

We parked in a visitor spot. Indira’s house was only a couple of houses away and in view. I couldn’t sleep because I was too anxious and worried that I would miss her. I needed to wait until she left her house. I didn’t dare knock on her door. I had no desire to explain myself to her parents.

It was now early Saturday morning. I knew we looked like creepy, murderous stalkers, but I watched the house like a hawk. Just as my eyes began to drift downward and close, I saw a figure leaving Indira’s house—it was her—she had cut her hair short. She appeared sleepy and annoyed with heavy bags under her eyes. She had a small backpack slung over her shoulder. I waited until she was a considerable distance away from her house before pursuing.

I glanced at Vivian, who was still asleep, and then quietly exited the car. I slowly walked down the sidewalk and approached her as closely as possible without alerting her. Just as she was about to turn a corner, I called out to her.

“Indira!” I said in a relatively loud voice.

She stopped and stood still for several moments. When she turned around, her eyes bulged, and she was taken aback, almost tripping over herself.

“It’s me, Heather.”

“Oh my god.”

“I know this is weird and out of the blue, but… Hi, it’s been a while.”

“Heather… How did you find me? Why did you find me? Well, I suppose I know why you found me,” Indira smirked.

“You know, I never would’ve guessed that you could be pretty damn diabolical.”
