This is how you make a demon

The hair on Damian’s arms raised as he read the words. This is how you make a demon.
Was that how Jun saw himself?
We’re not demons, Jun. Damian stared at the words. You and I, we’re the ones who said no. We’re the ones who are the most human. We stand against the storm. And if they think that makes us demons, then demons are on the right side.
A brief flash of Mr. Su’s face crossed his thoughts. Accomplices. He’d had that discussion with his therapist many times. Evil men, wounded men, couldn’t wreak the damage they did without accomplices.
Damian woke his phone and scrolled through his contacts. He had a list of people to call, but one topped them all: Bryce.
Bryce answered on the fourth ring: “Sathers.” There was noise in the background as if he were at some sort of party.
“I need advice.”
“Shoot.”
“This is confidential. I’m calling as a friend.”
“Let me get out the door here. Ah, yes, much better. I can hear you now.” Bryce’s voice filtered through the phone. “Go for it.”
“Junseo is a US citizen, unbeknownst to him. South Korea will not recognize that. We just found his paperwork yesterday.”
“He wouldn’t be the first. He’s going to have to make choices.”
“I know. But I don’t think you can renounce citizenship anywhere with outstanding legal issues. Which he has in both countries.”
“What kind?”
“We don’t know if he’s square with the IRS in the US because they tried to hide that he had US citizenship.”
“Ah, well, that could be an issue. He’d need to get his affairs in order before renouncing.”
“But he’s on US soil, so he can ask to be recognized with the rights of a US citizen.”
“Yes. What are his Korean legal issues? Aren’t they all civil right now?”
“No. It looks like someone is going to try to get him charged with murder.”
“Evidence?”
“Someone may have manufactured some.”
“Then he needs an excellent lawyer.”
“Last time he cooperated with the police in Seoul, individuals associated with the police kidnapped him and took him to a remote location for sex trafficking. Now they’re trying to cover that up.”
“Did anyone actually die?”
“It’s a possibility.”
Bryce hummed. “I saw the pictures. He took some nasty hits. My wife was beside herself.”
Damian growled a little in the back of his throat. “I want to get Jun on record for what happened, officially, before they go public with their frame job.”
