Stepping up behind him, Cordelia peered around him, her voice dropping to a low purr that had his forbidden parts twitching in his pants. “Good job, baby boy.”
“Thank you, Ma’am.”
“Good boy, accepting that compliment.” Turning away from him, she pulled Ivy into her arms, dipping her head to brush a kiss over her lips and he tried his best to ignore the little flash of jealousy at the easy affection they shared. “What else is on the agenda for today, Ivy Mae?”
“I was thinking we might go outside for school today. It’s a pretty day and I was hoping maybe we could find some bugs or something to talk about.” There was such hope in her voice, it had his own chest welling with excitement at the prospect of leaving the house, even if it was just to go a few feet outside.
“Sorry, blossom. I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Glancing over, he watched as Ivy deflated, her shoulders hunching forward and her bottom lip pushing out in a pout. “But why? We’re out here in the middle of nowhere. Nobody is going to see us.”
“Maybe. But that’s not a risk I’m willing to take. Not with Jacob and certainly not with you.”
“But Daddy?—”
“The answer is no, Ivy Mae.”
For a moment, he thought she was going to argue. Her face screwed up a bit, and she looked exactly like little Sarabeth when she was on the verge of a tantrum.
But then she sighed, and though she looked so sad it broke his heart to see it, she nodded. “Yes, Daddy.”
Cupping Ivy’s face in her hand, Cordelia brushed another kiss over her pouty lips. “That’s my good girl.”
Pink flooded Ivy’s cheeks and when she turned to face him, she didn’t look quite so sad. “I think that pancake is about ready to flip, Jakey. Do you remember how?”
“Yes, Ma’am.” Picking up the spatula, he carefully slid it beneath the bubbling pancake and in one less-than-fluid motion managed to flip it over.
“Good job! I’m going to take these to Dee and you can have the next few.”
“Thanks, Ivy. This is kinda fun.”
Her entire face seemed to light up at that. “Really?”
“Yeah. I appreciate you teaching me.”
“You’re so sweet I swear you’re going to give me a cavity,” she said with a giggle as she picked up the plate of pancakes and carried them over to the kitchen table.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Cordelia snag her around the waist, pulling Ivy onto her lap as she let out a screeching laugh of protest.
“Dee! Let me go, I have to make sure Jacob doesn’t burn the pancakes!”
“You said yourself he was doing a great job. He’ll be fine for a few minutes.”
Wrapping Ivy’s ponytail around her hand, Cordelia forced her girl’s head back as she leaned in, claiming her lips in a kiss so thorough he swore he could feel it. By the time she let Ivy up to come help him with the rest of the pancakes, Ivy’s eyes were glazed and her cheeks flush with pleasure.
What would it be like to kiss one of them? Both of them? Imagining the feel of their soft lips on his kept him occupied all through breakfast, after which Cordelia dismissed them to the dining room for their first lesson of the day.
But he couldn’t concentrate. Not when his mind was so full of all the other things he so badly wanted them to teach him.
“Jacob. Earth to Jacob.”
Ivy’s hand waving in front of his face jolted him out of his daydream. “Sorry. Sorry. I was… distracted.”
“I can tell.” Her dry response was accompanied by a grin. “Whatcha thinkin’ bout?”
“Nothing.” But his cheeks heated as he thought of telling her the truth.
“That doesn't look like ‘nothing’.” Tilting her head to the side, she studied him with those deep, dark eyes. “I wanna know what put that adorable blush on your cheeks.”
