“Okay. I’ll have a police report too. The cops are coming.”
“Good. And if anyone needs to be put up at the hotel or a rental, we’ll cover that too, if they were just on a day trip and the guys can’t fix their tires today.”
“Got it. I should pull up the camera footage, right?”
“Yes. Save it as files, one for us, one for the cops.”
“Will do.”
“Keep me in the loop,” Liz said. “Jesus, what a mess.”
“Sorry, lady. Why does this shit always happen at the worst time?”
“Never a good time for this.”
Kylie huffed out a laugh which felt like it was on the very edge of hysteria. “True enough.”
“You’re doing great. You’ve got this. Call if you need me.”
“I will. Or at least I’ll text a million times.” Kylie shook her head. “Later.”
“Be safe, honey.”
“Thanks.” She made another call on the way back through the office. Insurance, pictures, cops. She could fucking do this, and when she found out from the cameras who had done this, she was going to kill them.
She dialed up the cameras, frowning when she didn’t see anything.
Not anything. What the fuck? There was just black. Okay. She grabbed her phone and the office phone and headed outside.
She stared at the cameras. “Motherfucker.”
Someone had spray-painted them black.
“Hey, Ky.” One of the local deputies she knew walked over, just exiting his car as she came out. “What the hell?”
“Right? What is going on here?” She didn’t understand. Seriously. What the fuck?
“I don’t know, but we’ll find out. Did you look at the footage?”
“Not far enough back to see who did this.”
“Okay. Let’s look at the vehicles first.”
“Right. This is insane. The owners are out of town at a wedding.”
“Oh, man. So you’re my contact on this?” He took out a little notebook and a pencil.
“Yes. Absolutely. I have spoken to Liz, but I’m the one that’s here.” God. She was doing this.
“Got it. Okay, so let’s go have a look.”
Kylie followed him out to the cars, and then it was a blur of slashed tires, scared guests, tired guides, and money out of M&M’s pocket.
And when they called up the video what seemed like hours later, there was a skinny guy in a ski mask spray painting the cameras.
“Know who he is?”
Kylie frowned. “I mean, he looks like half the kids who didn’t get jobs here this summer without seeing face.”
