Spencer

How did Spencer end up sleeping on his ex-girlfriend’s couch?

Oh, right, he had nowhere else to go.

He rubbed his eyes and sat up as the sound of a blender came from the kitchen. Victoria’s home was a cute beach cottage—like she’d always dreamed about. No matter how much they once loved each other, they wanted different things in life. Basically, she wanted to stay in Gulf City, and he ran the first chance he got.

Victoria appeared in the doorway, two smoothies in hand. He laughed at the sight, realizing she hadn’t changed as much as he thought.

“You and your smoothies.” He accepted one of them.

She shrugged. “They’re healthy.”

“Not when you load them with sugar.” He took a sip.

“And kale.”

He choked it down. “What? Since when do you eat kale?”

“Don’t pretend you know me anymore, Spence.” She sat on the arm of the couch. “Want to tell me why you showed up here at an hour too awful to even mention?”

“No. I’d rather drink the kale.”

Her lips twitched up. No matter how they’d ended or what they’d been through together, he still cared about her. Victoria had been his best friend since he was a kid and fell in childhood-love with her.

He’d never been able to hide his secrets from her.

With a sigh, he leaned forward to set the plastic cup on the antique coffee table. “This table is from your mom’s house? I recognize it.”

“Nice avoidance there. Spill.”

“My family isn’t exactly thrilled I’ve returned.”

Her brow furrowed. “That doesn’t sound like your parents.”

“I knew coming back would be hard, but this… Vic, they won’t talk to me.”

“What about Damo?”

“My brother is the bright spot. Nothing has changed between us.”

She smiled. “Your parents will come around.”

He shook his head. “I’ve been sleeping in the bunkhouse because they won’t let me into the main house. Last night, I got home in the middle of the night with Damien and had it out with my dad. Hence my appearing at your door.” He met her gaze. “I had nowhere else to go.”

She sipped her smoothie, staring at him over the rim of the cup. “You know you can always come to me. Nothing that happened between us changed that. What were you and Damien doing in the middle of the night?”

A smile spread across his lips. “Sneaking goats into the high school.”

She choked, almost spitting out her drink. “That’s… yeah, okay, you can stay here. Why didn’t we think of that when we were in school?” She laughed. “Goats. Genius. Wait, isn’t your brother only a sophomore? That sounds more like a senior prank thing.”

“It was. This girl asked Damien for his help.”

“Girl, huh? I always assumed he was…” She waggled her eyebrows.

How the heck did Vic know something Spencer only figured out when his brother spelled it out for him. “Was what, Vic?”

“Too smart for girls.” She didn’t say the word, but Spencer knew it was on her mind.
