“We’ll find him.” If it was the last thing he did, he’d find that goat. For her.
“Be careful, Spence.”
“See you back at the house.” He hung up and slipped the phone back into his pocket. Reaching down, he offered a hand to Hadley. “Come on.”
She took the help and pulled herself up. “Did they find them?”
“Five of them. Stammer…”
She sucked in a breath before blowing raindrops off her lips. “We have to find him, Spencer.”
“We will.”
For once, they weren’t arguing or trying to annoy each other. They had the same goal and wouldn’t stop until they accomplished it.
She searched his eyes, for what he didn’t know, and nodded before turning toward the woods.
He bit back a smile. Her entire backside was coated in a thick layer of mud.
They searched the trees, finding nothing. By the time they got back on the four-wheeler, he wasn’t sure where to look next.
They scoured the land to the south before heading back toward the house. Stammer couldn’t have gotten far.
Leaving the four-wheeler outside the barn, he helped Hadley off. She didn’t let go of his hand, and he didn’t pull it back.
“What if we don’t find him?” she asked.
“We will.”
“But what if we don’t?”
He looked to the sky as the rain started letting up. “Then we have to hope he finds his way back.”
“He’s a goat, Spencer.”
“I’m aware.”
Spencer froze as he looked toward the building he currently called home. The back door to the bunkhouse stood open, and he tried to remember if he’d left it like that.
His eyes widened as it hit him. He’d left the heavy outer door open to air the place out today, leaving only the swinging screen door to keep anything out.
He released Hadley and picked up the pace. She ran after him.
Bursting through the screen door, he walked down the short hall past the kitchenette and living space. He glanced into each room. It was a long shot, but they hadn’t found Stammer anywhere else.
“Is this where you live?” Hadley asked.
He tried to see what the WentWood princess saw. Tiny rooms consisting of only single wooden beds and thin mattresses along with a desk and a dresser.
Barely any living space.
It didn’t bother Spencer or Gabe because a house was only for sleeping. They spent all their time out on the ranch.
But to someone like Hadley?
He walked through his open bedroom door and stopped.
A laugh burst out of Hadley.
