She knew what Charlotte would say. The ever-cautious girl would tell her to be careful, that he’s older and more experienced.
Careful had never been Hadley’s strong suit.
Intermission was on the giant TV when she settled on the couch in Roman’s vacated spot.
The doorbell rang, but she barely noticed it as she leaned back, sinking into the couch. It wasn’t until a while later she heard her grandfather’s voice.
“Kids, come into the kitchen please,” Mr. Carrigan called.
Hadley pulled herself off the couch and followed her friends, stopping when she caught sight of the ice cream cake sitting in the middle of the table.
Papa stood behind it, a grin on his face. “Happy birthday, Hadley.”
Mr. Carrigan brought over plates as Hadley walked closer. A laugh burst out of her when she took in the animals on top of the cake. “Are those goats?”
Her grandfather chuckled. “You should have seen the looks I got at the store when I asked for a goat cake. I was going to make a cake myself, but Roman and I agreed I couldn’t do the theme justice.”
“Well, let’s cut this puppy.” She rubbed her hands together.
As her grandfather started cutting the cake, her phone buzzed. She pulled it free and unlocked it, smiling when she saw the message lighting up the screen.
Spencer:Don’t worry. I’ll definitely be kissing you again.
