“You play hockey?”
She laughed. “I try. There’s this pickup game at the rink every Friday night. The guys and Charlotte let me play, but I kind of suck.”
He couldn’t imagine a world in which Hadley didn’t excel at everything.
She sighed. “I was too tired last week. This place is murder on my social life.”
Spencer laughed, knowing exactly what she meant. Other than Victoria, he hadn’t had much of a social life in high school because of the constant work and exhaustion. At least Damien had hockey. He was glad for that.
“I’m sorry you have to be here.” He was. She shouldn’t be punished for stealing the goats when both he and Damien helped.
She shrugged. “It’s okay. Adds to my street cred. I’m the farm bandit.”
He bumped her shoulder with a laugh. “And totally ridiculous.” The truth was, he was glad she’d been caught. It was selfish, but he couldn’t imagine the last week without her annoying him.
“You like my ridiculousness.” She flashed him a grin.
“Nope.” He shook his head, one corner of his mouth curving up.
She turned to walked backwards in front of him. “Not even a little?”
“You should really learn to be more serious.”
She stumbled, and he reached out to catch her before she fell.
“And less clumsy.” He didn’t release her, keeping her pinned against his chest. “I swear I have a heart attack every time you stumble.”
They stood in front of the main house, but he suddenly didn’t care. Not when she looked up at him, her long lashes fluttering against her cheeks.
“So,” she whispered. “When are you going to kiss me again?”
“I never said I was going to kiss you.” He enjoyed the pout his words brought forth.
“I have proof.”
“Ah, well then. I can’t go back on my word, can I?”
“That would be a very bad thing to do.”
He leaned in, his lips only a breath from hers, when a car horn made them jump apart.
Spencer cursed when he saw Victoria’s light blue Acura.
He turned around to say something to Hadley, but she’d already run up the steps and into the house. His eyes were still on the door she’d disappeared through when Victoria walked up.
“Earth to Spence.” She shoved his shoulder.
“Hey, Vic.”
“What’s got your face all messed up.” She screwed up her expression to imitate what she thought he looked like.
“Nothing.”
She laughed. “Well, it kind of looked like I interrupted a moment here.”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “You saw that?”
“What I saw was you almost kissing a high school girl.”
