“And the goats?” she whispered.

“Goats make awesome—”

She cut him off with a kiss she never wanted to end. A kiss she’d remember after he was nothing more than a fond memory. The first guy who ever made her heart skip a beat. The one she couldn’t have.

A throat clearing made her jerk away and roll off him. She popped up, coming eye to eye with Mr. Lee.

“Hey, Mr. Lee. We’re just giving Harbi a bath.” She gave him a close-lipped smile.

He looked past her to where Harbinger roamed the pen on his own. His eyes drifted back to her soaked clothing before settling on his son. “Spencer, get Harbinger back to his stall. Then meet me at the house. Hadley, there’s not much more for you here today. You can head home.”

“But it’s only lunch time,” she protested.

“Dad—” Spencer started.

His sharp gaze cut them both off. “Hadley, you’re a kid. Go enjoy an afternoon of spring break while you still can. We’ll see you tomorrow. Spencer, I’ll see you in five.” With that, he stalked off.

“Think he’s mad?” Hadley bit her lip. She didn’t like it when people were mad at her.

Spencer wrapped her in a hug. “He’ll survive.” He kissed the side of her head and released her. “See you tomorrow?”

“I’ll be here.”

As she walked away, she couldn’t help but feel this was the moment that would determine what they were to each other.

Her heart told her to turn around, to send him one last smile of encouragement, but she told her heart to shove it and got into her car.

Mr. Lee looked so angry, but also… disappointed in his son, as if Spencer was just being a screw up again.

She pulled down the long drive and out onto the winding road to head back into town, but her mind never left the ranch and the people on it. How had they become so important to her in such a short time?

It wasn’t possible, was it?

She’d finally found her place, somewhere she felt she was meant to be, and realized it couldn’t last. Just like everything with Spencer, her relationship with the Lees was a fleeting moment in time she’d look back on with fondness and maybe a bit of regret.
