She looked sideways at Nicky. “It’s not like that with me and Logan. We’re friends. Well, more like frenemies really. He’s Killian’s roommate, and we have this music project together. We have to write and perform a song.”
“You’re going to perform? Tell me when, and I’ll make sure I’m there.”
“You don’t have to.” She looked down at her hands.
“Wylder, my best friend is going to perform for the first time in forever. There’s no way I’m missing that.”
Wylder smiled, glancing out the window at the passing town. Before there was Killian and Diego and Devyn, Nicky was her only friend. When he’d fallen for her brother, she worried that would change, but he was still the same guy.
They parked in the lot outside the diner as Wylder’s dad got out of his car at the hardware store across the road.
“Duck.” Nicky pushed her down.
When Wylder came up, her dad was gone. “Nice call. Oh, we need to let Logan out!” She’d almost forgotten about him.
Jumping out, she ran around to the back and opened the trunk.
He groaned as he pulled himself out. “I feel like a dead body you’re hiding from the cops with my limbs bent every which way.”
She poked his stomach. “You look like one too.” Sticking her tongue out, she pointed to the diner. “Best milkshakes in the world. Come on.”
Mrs. Callahan waved from the kitchen door as they entered and hurried over to drop menus they wouldn’t need on the table they chose.
When she snuck off campus, it was almost always to come here, the best place in Twin Rivers.
They ordered their shakes and slid onto vinyl booths. Wylder couldn’t stop grinning at Nicky, unable to believe he was there. “I guess I don’t need to introduce you two.”
Logan shook his head, not speaking.
Nicky gave him a wry smile. “Becks has had some issues with his brother, so we’ve met a few times.”
“Becks never told me that.” Even when she’d started seeing Sebastian.
“Well, you were in love with his brother, and he didn’t want to ruin that.”
Wylder’s entire face heated. She was going to kill Nicky.
He went on. “You know… your crazy fandom for Luke Cook?” He leaned toward Logan. “She once escaped Beckett’s concert at a music festival to go to Luke’s in the rain.” Where she’d first kissed Sebastian.
Logan grimaced. “It’s okay, I’m used to Luke’s fangirls.”
“I just liked his music,” she grumbled.
Something indecipherable passed over Logan’s face before he shook it off.
Subject change needed. Wylder looked at Nicky. “So, why are you in town, anyway?”
“Dad’s birthday.” He shrugged. “We’re doing a family dinner tonight.” He checked his phone. “In about an hour. Then I need to drive back so I can be ready for a test Monday. But I had to see you.”
“Dude, I was with you and Becks all summer.”
“So.” He shrugged. “Wylder withdrawal is a real thing.”
She laughed and the three of them spent the next half hour chatting and drinking their shakes until it was time for Nicky to drive them back behind their high walls.

Wylder could do this.
