“Logan, wait!” Wylder ran after him, her thoughts in a blur.

What just happened? She didnotjust kiss her teacher. And he certainly hadn’t suggested they carry on some secret affair until she graduated. How was this her life?

“Logan!” She ran along the path around the lake. Why did everyone seem to insist on making her run lately?

Logan whirled around as she approached. She clutched her side and panted for breath. She was seriously out of shape. Not that she’d ever beeninshape.

“You do not want to talk to me right now, Wylder. Just go home. Leave me alone. Leave my family alone.” He turned back, his shoulders tense and his gait angry.

“It’s not what you think!” she called after him.

“It’s not?” he yelled over his shoulder. “So I just imagined you making out with my brother?”

“You can’t tell anyone.” She charged ahead, grabbing his hand to make him stop. “It’s not what you think, Logan.” She gulped for air. “We met … in … Nashville. Over the summer.” She leaned over to catch her breath. “We dated all summer. It was … incredible. And then he left for a new job, and I went back to school thinking I’d never see him again. I didn’t know until I walked into English Lit on the first day. That’s why I dropped my books when I came in late. I was completely freaked out. And I’ve been freaked out ever since.”

“It was you?” Logan’s shoulders relaxed. “You were the girl he was sneaking around with all summer?”

“Yeah. We kind of fell hard for each other. And now this.” She flung her hand back toward Sebastian’s house. “It’s all a giant mess. But I don’t have any intentions of messing around with Bash. It’s too much of a risk. That was just … a mistake that will not happen again. But I have to keep my distance, Logan. I can’t go back there. And you can’t tell anyone.”

“You have to promise, Wylder. This place … this is our last chance. I need this school to work for my family.”

“You have my word.”

“Dating a teacher is …”

“Gross?” Wylder supplied. “Epically stupid?”

“The most epic of bad decisions. I know he’s only five years older than us, but it’s a big five years.”

“I’m nineteen. It’s only four years difference.”

“In the regular world that wouldn’t seem like an issue.” Logan shifted nervously, the gravel crunching under his feet.

“But at Defiance Academy it’s a bad idea, trust me, I know.”

“Then we’ll just have to find a different place to work.” Logan turned back toward the dorms.

“Tonight. We have to figure out that third verse.” Wylder trotted along beside him.

“We can work acapella for now. I’ll … uh … see if I can find a guitar for next time.” He scratched the back of his head.

“Don’t play an instrument, do you?” Wylder nudged him with her elbow.

“You underestimate how badly I didn’t want to be in this class.”

“Same.” Wylder sighed, still itching to strangle her brother for doing this to her. But she wouldn’t ask what Logan’s hesitations were. Not when she had her own hang-ups about music. They’d just get through this performance and then go back to avoiding music as much as possible. Wylder was content to enjoy others’ music. She didn’t need to make her own.

“Meet you back in your room in twenty?” Logan said as they made their way back up to the dormitories.

“Sure.” Wylder turned toward the dining hall.

“Where are you going?”

“Snacks. We need snacks now that you’ve teased me with nachos I can’t have.”

“The dining hall is closed.”
