“I wasn’t creeping.” She knelt to pick up her snacks.
“You were creeping.” Logan knelt beside her. “You feeding an army or having a party?”
“I needed study snacks,” she muttered.
“This is all for you?” He shook his head. “Three microwave pizzas and Monday’s leftover fried rice?” He eyed her with raised brows. “What else you got in there?” He pointed to her bulging messenger bag.
“Just your run of the mill snacks for a long night of studying.”
“What are you studying?”
“A ridiculous book I don’t understand. What are you doing out so late lurking among the trees?”
“I’m not lurking.”
“You were lurking.”
“Come with me.” He beckoned her to follow him off the well-worn path to the dining hall. Ducking under several low-hanging branches she’d passed by a thousand times, he showed her an old wrought iron bench that looked out over the campus.
“I didn’t know this was here.” She sat down, setting her bags on the ground beside her.
“Security doesn’t seem to know it either. I found it my first week here. I was looking for a place to go at night when I can’t sleep.”
“Oh, I never have that problem.” Wylder fished around in her bag of contraband and produced a couple of cold seltzer waters and a bag of chips.
“A late-night walk outside usually does the trick for me.” He helped himself to her chips.
“It’s nice.” Wylder munched on her chips and chanced a glance at Logan. “It’s awfully quiet out here. Kinda eerie when it’s usually so loud and chaotic during the day. A bit spooky in the moonlight and fog.”
Logan laughed and shook his head.
“Am I intruding on your quiet time? I can go.” She started to gather her things.
“No, please stay. I like the chatter.”
“I don’t chatter.” Wylder sat back down.
“You chatter.” He smiled.
“I ended it, you know.” She sat back and stared up at the moon, avoiding his gaze.
“Ended what?”
“Things… with Bash.”
“What made you decide to do that?”
“I need to start making better choices.” She shrugged, letting the stillness of the night envelop them. It was nice just sitting quietly with him out here in the chilly night.
“Well, that’s a good one to start with.”
“I’m going to fail his class, but I guess I made one smart decision this semester.”
“I can help you.”
“That’s the second offer I’ve had from the Cook brothers today.”
“He didn’t?” Logan groaned.
