“Becks and Luke make it look so easy, don’t they?” Wylder scooted to the edge of the bench to meet his worried gaze. “The one time Becks pulled me on stage to sing a duet with him, I thought I was going to faint. It was awful. I don’t know how I got through it, but he’s lucky he survived the night.”

“I saw the video, Wylds. You two were amazing together.”

“Come on, you know you’re amazing. Stage fright isn’t about worrying if you’re going to suck.”

“No, it’s more about worrying if I’m going to die of a stroke onstage for the world to see.”

“Hey. Look at me.” Wylder reached out and tilted his chin up to meet her gaze. “We’ve got this. We’re totally going to hide behind Diego’s flashy holograms, and people will be so focused on that, they won’t even notice us till it’s over.”

“Yeah, that’s the only thing that’s keeping me from running away right now.”

“Besides, whenever you get nervous, just look at me. We’ll get through it together.

“No one told me we had to have outfits!” Wylder rushed around backstage, trying to find her people.

Their classmates were poised and ready for their performances dressed in varying degrees of professionally tailored and sequined garments meant to wow their audience.

She was dressed in her signature after-hours jeans and t-shirt attire with her pixie cut hair a vibrant shade of glittered purple.

“Wylds! Over here!” Killian called to her across the crowd of people, none of whom she recognized from class.

“Did you know about the outfits?” she asked Logan who was sitting in a chair in front of a makeup table.

“Outfits are the least of our worries.” He leaned over, looking a little green.

“Hey.” She crouched in front of him. “Remember what I said last night? It’s just you and me out there. No one else matters, so if you get nervous just look for me. I’ll be the one playing the drums.”

Logan nodded. “I’m going to kill Bash for making me do this.”

“That will be our celebratory after party. When this is over, we’ll make our siblings pay. I’ll drive the getaway car, and we can hide the bodies together. It’ll be fun road tripping it to Nashville to find Becks.”

Logan cracked a smile at that. “Promise?”

“Pinky swear.” She winked.

“No one’s going to be looking at either of you anyway,” Killian said. “Everyone will be wowed by Diego’s holograms.”

Diego stood at the makeup table tapping on his computer, oblivious of Logan’s distress.

“About that last thing I asked you for.” Wylder lowered her voice. “Is that doable?”

Diego looked up, pushing his glasses back on his nose, and nodded. “Totally done. None of this is going to be very professional, but it’ll work. I think.”

“It’ll be great.” Wylder draped her arm across Diego’s shoulders. “Thanks for this. I owe you big time.”

“You’re welcome. Glad to help.”

“What last thing are you talking about?” Logan frowned at her. “We went through rehearsals already. You can’t throw anything new at me now.”

“Relax. I just asked Diego to put a veil of fairy lights between us and the holograms instead of the screen we’d planned. The holograms will take center stage and we’re just the backup singers. Tonight we’re letting them tell our story.”

Logan nodded. “That’s good. I-I think that’ll help.”

“Wylds!” She turned at the sound of her name.

“Oh would you look at that.” Wylder nudged Logan. “Looks like we won’t be road tripping it after all. Becks came for his own funeral.”
