The driver opening his door made her jump.

It was going to take a lot of getting used to for her. She no longer lived in the French countryside where life moved at a slower space.

Here, one either sped up or got run over by the energy.

“It’s going to be okay.” Noah threaded her fingers with his.

The driver turned in his seat. “Settle in back there. I’ll have you to your destination soon.”

Noah leaned back in his seat, closing his eyes as exhaustion wound through him. It seemed like a lifetime had passed since he left L.A. after the tour with Drew. And that lifetime was tiring. Every bit of energy, emotional and physical, had been drained out of him.

But when he was back here, he could almost pretend nothing had changed, that Carson was still out there somewhere. Except the pressure in his hand told him otherwise.

What happened now?

Noah sighed and swiveled his head to look at Melanie. “So, I assume the label will want to meet with me since I disappeared on them.”

Her grimace said it all. “They weren’t happy with you, but once you explain, they’ll understand. My dad still wants you to do some solo shows before Jo has her baby.”

“I’m not a solo act.”

“Noah.” She sighed. “We need to keep you out there. I think it’ll be good for you. Maybe just a Christmas show? We could go back to your roots and choose a small bar, record the show, and drop it on YouTube.”

“Maybe.” He wouldn’t commit to anything until he had Stella settled. “What about going back into the studio? Jo could surely do that right now.”

“Yes, if she wasn’t refusing to leave her house. She’s terrified someone will see her.”

“So what if they do?”

Melanie shook her head. “And then the headlines will read Jo Jackson got knocked up by a mystery guy. They’d all probably assume it was you. I don’t blame her for wanting to protect herself a while longer. Besides, you don’t have new songs for the album yet. We’re working on that.”

“I want a Piper Hayes song.”

Melanie shook her head with a laugh. “Of course you do. Everyone wants a Piper Hayes song right now, but she’s a little busy with Drew’s tour.”

He groaned. “Drew is too needy.”

“I’ll be sure to pass that along.”

The car pulled to a stop, and if Noah had been paying attention, he’d have noticed they hadn’t gone straight to his home. Now, a house he didn’t recognize—about twice the size of his—sat in front of them.

Stella leaned over him, her eyes wide as she surveyed their surroundings.Well, kid, you’re not in small town France anymore.

“Where are we?” Noah rested an arm on the shoulder of the front passenger seat. “I think you have the wrong address.”

The driver looked down at his phone. “No, this is the address we were given.” Without another word, he slid out of the car.

“What’s going on?” Melanie hissed.

Noah should have seen it. The car he hadn’t ordered, the way the driver hadn’t even asked for instructions.

“I think we’ve been abducted.”

Stella burrowed into his side. “I don’t think I like America.”

Noah squeezed her to him. “Everyone, stay calm. We need to get away from the driver and to the house next door. Mel, do you have your phone? We need to call someone—”

He was cut off by the driver opening the door and beaming a smile at them. “Welcome, we’ll take your bags to the house. Your host is waiting for you.”
