“Since when do you care what they think?”
He laughed at that. “Well, Mr. Snyder is already going to hate me.”
“Why?” She pulled away and narrowed her eyes. “What did you do, Noah?”
Once this secret was out, he couldn’t call it back in. He and Melanie had removed their wedding rings the moment they left France, but it didn’t change what happened.
“Noah, I left my house for you when I’d planned on becoming a hermit. That’s huge. The moment Dax called to say you were flying in and that he had a car picking you up, I knew I had to come. You and me… we’re a pair, partners. So, if there’s something that’s going to anger the label, you need to tell me.”
He released her and ran a hand through his hair. Stepping away, he walked to the edge of the deck. There was no way he could look into her eyes when spoke the words.
“Noah—”
“I married her.”
Jo didn’t speak for a long moment. “Who?”
“Melanie. We… She’s my wife.”
Silence. That was Jo’s response. Complete and utter silence.
And then pain.
Noah whipped around when Jo punched him in the back. “Stop.” She swung again, and he caught her fist. “Jo. Joey!”
“Don’t you Joey me. Can’t you find another girl to play house with? I love Mel, Noah. She is practically the only female friend I have ever had. She’s family, and she’s our publicist. What happens when you crush her? Huh, Noah? Tell me. What happens then?”
Those words struck something deep inside Noah. What happens when you crush her?
When Noah didn’t respond, Jo turned on her heel and marched back inside. Noah followed her.
Jo pointed to Dax. “You, get Drew on the line. I don’t care what he’s doing. I’m calling an emergency Rockstars Anonymous meeting.”
Dax and Ben shared a confused look, but Dax walked off, returning a moment later with his laptop.
“Why the meeting, Joey?” Ben’s brow creased.
“Because.” She waved a finger between Melanie and Noah. “These two idiots went and got married.”
Melanie buried her face in her hands, probably to avoid seeing the stunned looks Noah couldn’t look away from. Ben had never had a poker face. His eyebrows arched, and his jaw dropped.
Dax pursed his lips and sat on the end of the couch. “Okay, I’m video calling Drew.”
That was it, his only reaction. Noah waited for more. He waited for his friends to yell at him the way Jo had, for them to do something, anything.
Drew didn’t answer the call.
“Try again,” Jo demanded. “We need to all be together for this.”
She took a seat next to Melanie. Oh sure, she wasn’t mad at her, only Noah. Figured.
Did she have a right to be?
No. What was Noah thinking? No one had a right to be mad when none of it was real. They just needed to give him a chance to explain.
Melanie wouldn’t meet his eyes, and he let out a long sigh as the ringing of the video call punctuated the silence. Finally, Drew’s groggy voice answered.
“What?” he practically growled.
