Drew left the door open, and a moment later Piper and Lola joined them.

Lola placed a kiss on Drew’s cheek before smiling at Melanie. Despite the fact she’d spent a lot of effort lately getting the media to back of Drew and Lola’s relationship, Melanie wasn’t used to seeing them together.

They were… sweet, which didn’t exactly fit Drew. It didn’t fit any of her rock stars.

Hadn’t Noah been sweet too?She pictured him with Stella, the way he’d fought for her before he really knew her.

Piper stared at her with sad eyes, eyes that saw right through the shield Melanie had put in place since talking to her dad the week before.

Drew dropped into a chair and pulled Lola into his lap. “So, do we have to call you Melanie Clarke now?”

“Drew,” Piper groaned.

“Babe.” Even Lola chastised him.

Drew shrugged. “Honestly, I kind of like it.”

Melanie shoved her suitcase into the corner and kicked off her heels, sighing at the relief. “Don’t start with me, Drew.”

“What? It’s not like no one saw this coming. You and Noah have always had this energy. Anyone could have seen it.”

“I didn’t see it.” Piper, Drew’s assistant, sent Melanie a smile like her statement was helpful.

Instead, it only made Melanie wish they’d all leave so she could bury her head in her pillow.

Lola pursed her lips. “Does Noah really have a kid now?” One eyebrow arched.

A laugh burst out of Drew. “I’d like to see that.”

Even Piper smiled at the thought.

A need to defend Noah, to defend what he had with Stella, rose out of nowhere. “You don’t know what you’re talking about or what those two have been through.”

No one said a word in response.

Piper stood and crossed the room to Melanie, pulling her into a hug. “We’re sorry.” She glanced back over her shoulder. “Right,Drew?”

Drew could never contradict Piper. Melanie thought he was a little scared of her. “Yeah. Yes. I just can’t believe Noah stepped up like that. It’s not like him.”

It wasn’t like the old him, but that was the thing about love. It changed a person. “He loves her.”

“He never even told us he had a brother. Man, we don’t really know anything about him, do we?”

Drew had always been an open book, sharing his family with everyone in his life. But it was easy to do when you were proud of them, when they loved you unconditionally.

Not everyone had that.

Melanie still knew little about Noah’s family, but she’d learned enough. They weren’t worthy of him. Whatever he’d gone through growing up pushed him to become the superstar he was, but more importantly, it pushed him to want to spare Stella that fate.

“How long do we get you?” Piper asked.

“Only a day.” She wished she could stay longer, that she could pretend the tour was where she needed to be. “I’m here to run Drew’s press event in the morning.”

Drew grinned. “The label doesn’t trust me to do it myself.”

“Can you blame them?” Melanie lifted one eyebrow.

Lola laughed at that. “I can’t.”
