“Hey.” Drew gripped her sides. “You’re supposed to be on my side.”

She twisted around to kiss him. “I am on your side. That’s why I’m glad Mel is here to make sure you don’t mess up.”

He sighed. “All the women in my life are against me.” Bringing Lola with him, he pushed to his feet. “We’re going to bed. See you in the morning for breakfast?”

“Sure.”

He stopped at her side and gripped her arm. “I’m glad the label sent you.”

Once they were gone, Melanie turned to Piper with a weary sigh. “He requires a lot of energy.”

“Tell me about it.” Piper laughed and ran a hand over the top of her head.

Melanie and Piper’s friendship dated back to when Piper was Quinn Hayes’ assistant, before she left her sister to work for Drew, before she fell in love with Ben Evans. It was a different friendship than she had with Rockstars Anonymous because she and Piper understood each other on a different level. Neither of them were famous, they weren’t meant for the stage, but they worked for those who were.

They pushed other people to succeed.

Piper was the best friend Melanie had.

Melanie took Drew’s vacated seat. “How do you put up with him all the time?”

“Well, it’s better than dealing with Quinn.” She laughed and sat on the corner of the bed. “Drew is… lovable. He can charm anyone into sticking around. And now that he has finally gotten the girl, he’s become more tolerable. It’s like he’s deliriously happy and wants everyone to be just as happy as him.”

“That’s why he claims he saw something between me and Noah?”

Piper nodded. “He thinks love fixes all things, like he’s this big expert just because he’s been in love for all of two seconds.”

A smile spread across Melanie’s face. That sounded like Drew.

“So.” Piper locked her gaze on Melanie. “Why are you really here?”

“It’s my job.”

“It’s not your job to come for one media event. I could have handled it.”

She was right. Piper was perfectly capable. “I don’t know.” She scrubbed a hand across her face. “I returned to work last week, and you would not believe how much built up while I was gone. My assistant could only do so much. But my office… it seems… cold. I don’t know if that makes sense. It never bothered me before that I didn’t decorate it, that I didn’t make it my own. I just couldn’t look at those bare walls any longer.”

Piper leaned forward. “You know, you could have—gasp—decorated it. Instead of flying across the country. But that’s not really what you’re running from. Tell me the truth, Mel.”

A truth she hadn’t told anyone else. But this wasn’t just anyone, it was Piper, a girl who understood what it was like living her life surrounded by rock stars.

“I miss him.”

“I’m assuming you mean Noah?”

Melanie nodded. She hadn’t talked to Noah in a week, not since she basically told him they had to go their separate ways. It wasn’t only that. She missedthem.NoahandStella. They’d added color to her gray-scale world and then took it right back.

“Okay, Mel. I’m going to give you some advice from a girl who fell in love with a rock star—”

“I’m not in love with him.”

Piper ignored that. “For so long, I didn’t tell Ben how I felt. If he hadn’t had more courage than me, we’d never have found what we have. But I wish I’d had that courage. I almost lost him because I didn’t.”

It was more complicated than that. Ben had been Piper’s sister’s boyfriend, but it worked out. Noah… It wasn’t about him. Melanie couldn’t let herself love anyone.

“I was married.” The words burst out of her.

Piper didn’t look surprised. “I heard. You and Noah—”
