“Then, let’s go clothes shopping.”

He groaned. “That’s all you.”

After Melanie picked out some outfits and put them in the cart, she navigated to the toys. “Barbies.”

“Really?” His face twisted in disgust.

“Hey.” She elbowed him. “You have a girl now. Live with it. Barbies, dress-up clothes.” She tapped her chin. “Video games.”

A laugh burst out of him. “Video games?”

“Don’t be sexist. All kids love Nintendo. It’ll be expensive.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“Well, okay then. Get a console and a few games. I’m partial to anything Mario.”

He looked sideways at her, a smile playing on his lips. “Melanie Snyder plays video games?” He couldn’t picture her sitting in front of the TV with a controller in her hands. He’d always thought she was more of the night out at a wine bar kind than an evening in playing games.

“For your information, my dad has an Xbox, and we play quite a bit.” She winced. “That sounded lame, didn’t it?”

“No.” He kissed the side of her head. “You’re lucky, you know. To be so close to your dad. It’s nice to see.”

“Even though he doesn’t like you?”

“Eh, I don’t think he dislikes me. He saved me tonight.”

She lifted a brow.

“The crowd outside the bar after my concert was a little nuts.” He lifted one shoulder. “Your dad showed up to whisk me out of there. It was pretty ace of him.”

“Tomorrow, my team will get your video online and push it out across the web. We’ll have it go viral before long.”

Noah put the computer on the bedside table before turning back to Melanie. “That’s nice, love, but you aren’t my publicist anymore.”

“I heard.”

He could tell by the aggravation in her voice she wasn’t happy about it. Leaning in, he whispered, “I can’t work with you when all I can think about is kissing you.” He pressed a soft kiss to her lips. “When I’d happily forget all work obligations the moment I saw you.” They were so close his words were a whisper on her lips. “How could we work under such conditions?”

She closed her eyes and hummed in the back of her throat. “You’re right. Can’t…” She kissed him. “Do it.”

He rolled her under him, taking everything she was willing to give.

But that was the problem, wasn’t it?

She wasn’t willing to give him everything.

“We aren’t a love song.”

He might not be her great love, but she could still be his.

It wasn’t the first time Noah shared a bed with Melanie, but it was the first time he got to hold her as she slept. He barely closed his eyes for fear he’d miss a single moment, knowing all of this could be gone too soon.

Had Melanie experienced the same thoughts before her husband passed? She called him her great love, her favorite person, yet it was all over in an instant.

Fear was a new emotion for him. He’d never really considered mortality until the moment he heard he’d never see Carson again. He hadn’t worried about losing the people he loved until Stella worked her way into his heart, until he held Melanie in his arms.
