My lips curved up as I fingered the petals of a white orchid.

I’d never met a group of people quite like Drew and Lola’s friends, but in a way, they also reminded me of the Kelly siblings. They’d do anything for each other, and do it with a smile on their faces. No favor was an imposition.

Just like Shane handing over his life savings. Tanner told me he’d done it without a thought, without asking to be paid back, though I knew Tanner would try.

Now, Shane was staying with his parents until he found a new rental.

My ringing phone drew my attention, and I pulled it free. It was the Kellys’ landline.

“Hello?”

“Rae?”

“Trevor?” He sounded like he’d been crying.

Trevor sniffled. “Yeah, can you, um, meet me?”

“Of course. I’m leaving now. I can come to you.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

“Of course, Trev.” I hung up, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Something was wrong. Trevor had been staying there all week, but had they decided that was enough? I couldn’t imagine Mrs. Kelly kicking him out, but if she did, I had a spare room now. The kid wasn’t going back onto the street.

I grabbed my purse from where I’d left it on a table and waved to the head of the security team, who was preparing things for tonight. I was supposed to meet Lola and the girls in an hour.

The drive to the Kelly house didn’t take long, and I walked in without knocking. Mrs. Kelly appeared in the doorway.

“Where’s Trevor?” I needed to find him. Now. I wasn’t sure how I’d come to care so much for the kid, but I had.

“He’s okay, Rae.” Mrs. Kelly’s voice was calm, soothing, but I didn’t want to be calm.

“Where is he?”

“Rae?” He walked from the kitchen, with red eyes and a tear-stained face.

I rushed forward and pulled him into a hug. “Whatever it is, Trev, we’ll deal with it, okay?”

He pulled away from me. “These are good tears.”

“What?”

“Why don’t you come in?” Mrs. Kelly smiled. “I have some tea brewing.”

I nodded, following the two of them to the dining room, where Mrs. Kelly had already set out three mugs and a tea pot. She poured the tea as I took a seat.

“What’s going on?”

Trevor sat across from me, his lips quivering. “My dad…” He couldn’t finish speaking.

Mrs. Kelly put a hand on his. “Trevor’s dad has signed over parental rights.”

“To whom?” My eyes widened, hope filling me for Trevor.

“My grandmother,” Trevor said. “Mr. Kelly tracked her down in California. She says she’s been trying to see me, but my dad cut off all communication after Mom died. Shane told her about what’s been happening here, and she wants me to come live with her.”

Tears welled in my eyes. “Trevor.” He was getting a happy ending. “I’m so happy for you.”
