My eyes flicked to the door. Johnny was here. A smile slid across my lips as I set the chapters aside and stood, not bothering to change out of my cow pajama bottoms and white tank top.

When I opened the door, he stood before me in his usual designer jeans and expensive shirt. He slid sunglasses into his hair, revealing those green eyes I loved so much. “Morning.”

I stepped out onto the porch and shut the door. “Why didn’t you knock?”

One hand caught me around the waist and snagged me to him. “Because I didn’t want an audience to do this.” He claimed my lips in a searing kiss that traveled all the way to my toes, leaving heat in its wake.

I could hardly breathe, but I didn’t want to stop as my lips parted, letting him in further, taking anything he was willing to give.

My hands slid up his shoulders to the back of his neck, where the slight fuzz was soft against my skin. Needing air, I pulled away, resting my forehead against his. “Never knock on the door again.”

A laugh boomed out of him, shaking us both. “Well, I think we missed on the whole not wanting an audience thing.”

I turned to see where he was looking to find his mother standing on her porch next door doing a little move that could only be called a victory dance. She stopped when she saw us looking. “Honey,” she yelled to her husband inside the house. “I found it. The, um, watering can.” She snatched it up.

“Was I supposed to know you were looking for it?” he called back.

“Of course. That’s why I’m out here dancing.”

“Why would you be—”

“That’s enough, dear,” she cut him off. “Let’s not get silly with all your questions. Really, you are a ridiculous man.”

“I don’t know what’s happening.”

We didn’t hear the rest because Mrs. Kelly went inside and shut the door behind her.

Johnny buried his face in my neck, his entire body shaking with laughter. “What just happened?”

“I think your mom knows about us,” I whispered, trying to keep my own laughter at bay.

“Safe to say she approves.”

My lips turned down, and I hid the expression by pressing another kiss to his lips. I wouldn’t ruin today by telling him it was time for me to leave.

“I love the new chapters,” I said against him. “But we’re going to need to talk about this Johnny character. No one names a character after themselves.”

He slid an arm over my shoulders and turned us toward the door. “But he’s awesome enough for me to pull it off.”

“No.” I led us inside. “He’s obnoxious.”

Gianna’s screech had us all running toward her.

“Is it a seizure?” Johnny asked.

“Are you in pain?” I looked her over, noticing her eyes were clear. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She shook her head, her eyes darting from me to Johnny. “Fe, tell them I’m okay.”

“I don’t see signs of a problem.” Felina pursed her lips in confusion.

“Then why on earth would you scream like that?” I asked.

Gianna pointed to where Johnny’s arm was now around my waist. “You… you two…” She couldn’t seem to find the words. “This is the best day of my life.”

Johnny and I shared an amused look until Gianna said, “Does this mean you won’t leave again?”

The hope in her voice was something I couldn’t crush. The fact that she thought only Johnny could keep me here, not her, hit me like a bludgeon. I’d been a terrible sister.
