Elizabeth’s back snapped straight, but she didn’t respond.

“Did you hear me, Elizabeth? I believe you know him.”

“Liz,” she said, a soft smile coming to her face. “Most people alternate between Liz and Lizzy, but I was only ever Liz to him.”

Jasmine sat in the chair next to the bed uninvited. “I heard your name.”

“What?”

“When you were out in the hall.” She met Liz’s gaze. “Nick… I think he said your name.”

Tears welled in her eyes, rolling down her cheeks when she blinked. “That’s not possible.”

“But it is.” Jasmine leaned forward, her elbows on the bed. “I know it is because I heard you say his name when you were in a coma too.”

“You…” Her eyes widened.

“I don’t know what made me come into your room, but it was like there was this pull. I think I needed to hear that, that I need to help you.” She sucked in a breath. “Liz, I really don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know anything more about Nick’s accident than when I started my investigation. I don’t know how you and he are connected. But I have this feeling in my gut there’s something here.”

Neither of them spoke for a long moment before Liz’s words spilled out in a jumble. “Nick’s accident… you said you’re investigating it?”

She nodded. “I don’t have enough to talk about it yet, but everyone here thinks I’m a nurse.”

“No,” she scoffed. “They would know if a stranger was here pretending to be one of them.”

“Apparently not. This is not my first time here. Not even the two doctors you were with have figured it out. I’m good at my job, Liz, which is how I know I can help you.”

She pulled her legs in, resting her arms on them. “How?”

Jasmine smiled. If Liz was the key to her story, she’d just stuck her in the door.

ELIZABETH

A wheelchair was a much better option. That was the first thought Elizabeth had when Jasmine helped her into the hall. At least this time she wouldn’t have to try to walk. But there was still the matter of Nick’s security guards.

Jasmine helped Elizabeth into the chair, her lips pursed in concentration. “I have an idea.” She slipped her phone out of her pocket and fired off a text.

It didn’t take long until they heard the ringing of the phone at the nurse’s station.

“Wait for it,” Jasmine whispered.

A nurse rushed by them, stopping in front of both security guards, talking quickly and gesturing back to the nurse’s station.

“What did you do?” Elizabeth asked.

“I asked Nick’s agent to call to talk to both of them.” She said it as if it wasn’t a big deal, but Elizabeth couldn’t wrap her head around suddenly being in this world of subterfuge and agents and reporters.

She’d known Nick was famous, had seen all of his movies, but at the lake it hadn’t seemed to matter.

“Where are you taking Miss Ross?”

Elizabeth cringed at the sound of Nurse Samantha’s voice, but Jasmine didn’t miss a beat, turning to her with a bright smile. “Dr. McCoy asked me to take her down to imaging for an updated CT scan.”

Her brow furrowed. “He didn’t mention it to me.”

“Well, you were on break. Maybe if you’d have come back on time, I wouldn’t have to deal with your patient for you.”
