Half an hour in. We’re tied. The Hawks are pressing hard.

Then I see it. Her movement stops.

My breath snags.

She sways a little. One of the cheer assistants reaches out. Maddie tries to wave her off. Her hand lifts and then drops. Then?—

She goes down.

Flat. Crumpling into the stairs like a rag doll.

My legs move before my brain catches up.

The announcer is still calling the last play when the camera cuts to her. The whole arena gasps. I push past the security guard, shouting her name.

Asher jumps the boards without a second thought. Ford’s right behind him.

So much for keeping this secret.

We reach her at the same time the medic does. Her skin is clammy, hair sticking to her forehead. She’s conscious but dazed, mumbling my name.

“Leo… too hot…”

The medic nods. “We’ll carry her out. Heat stroke likely. She’s dehydrated.”

Asher growls something under his breath. Ford’s face is carved from stone. I motion for them to follow, but the paramedics shake their heads.

“Give us room. We’ll bring her to the ambulance. Hospital protocol.”

I glance back at the ice. Coach Ace is glaring at me from the bench. I meet him halfway.

“Coach,” I say, voice tight, “I need Ford and Asher off the ice.”

He blinks once. Twice. His jaw twitches.

“This about the girl?”

I nod.

He sighs. “Get your replacements. You, me, all four of you. We talk after the game.”

“Understood.”

The three of us move fast, adrenaline and fear driving every step. We get to the ambulance just as they’re loading her in.

Her face is pale, eyes closed, but she’s breathing.

I grab my phone and dial Dr. Ellis. No way I’m trusting a hospital resident who doesn’t know her history.

By the time we reach the hospital, Ellis is already waiting.

“Take her to Room C. I’ll be there in five.”

The nurse leads her away, and we’re forced to wait.

The hallway is sterile and bright. Ford paces like a caged animal. Asher’s got his head against the wall, fists clenched.

“If something happens to her,” Ford says, voice low, “I swear to God…”
