“Let’s get this over with.”

I freeze, my stomach plummeting straight through the ice. I know that voice. I fucking know that voice.

Slowly, I turn, my heart lodging itself between my ribs—and there he is.

Leo.

He’s sitting at the evaluation table, arms crossed over his chest, jaw tight as fucking steel. His eyes meet mine. They darken immediately.

Daisy, clueless as hell, nudges me. “You good?”

I swallow.

“Yep,” I say, voice an octave higher than normal.

Leo’s expression doesn’t change as the first guy begins his bit. Not a flicker of surprise, not a hint of recognition.

And then he leans back in his chair, voice completely flat.

“Next,” he says, picking his phone up to type something. Is he even paying any attention to us? I sincerely doubt it.

He’s gonna play it like that? Fine.

Game fucking on.

When it’s finally my turn, I step forward, forcing my best confident smile.

“Madeline Lane,” I say, like we’re strangers.

Leo does put down his phone this time. His eyes are on me, but he doesn’t blink.

“Experience?”

I grin sweetly. “None. But I’m very enthusiastic.”

Daisy chokes on her coffee.

Leo exhales sharply, like he’s already over this. “Go ahead.”

I grab the mascot head, slide it on, and immediately trip over my own feet, face-planting hard. Silence. Then, someone snorts.

I push myself up, adjusting the oversized head, my face burning.

Leo is staring at me, completely unreadable.

I clear my throat. “I meant to do that.”

Daisy bursts out laughing.

Leo? Doesn’t. Even. Flinch.

“Try again,” he says, voice devoid of emotion.

I grit my teeth.

He wants to pretend last night didn’t happen?

Fine.
